The Mt. Naeba ski area combines the all-ability slopes of Naeba Ski Resort with the backcountry powder of Kagura Ski Resort - all under one lift pass and connected by the iconic 5.5 km ‘Dragondola’. And as the closest major resort to Tokyo, with a bullet train transfer, you can be on the mountain on the same day that you arrive in Japan!

Convenience doesn’t mean compromising on the skiing - Naeba and Kagura receive between 6 and 10 metres of cold light powder, and the ski area offers a huge range of groomed slopes and off-piste freeride terrain.

After you’ve skied your heart out in Naeba, you’ll return for two nights in Tokyo - one of the world’s most awe-inspiring cities, where traditional temples meet futuristic skylines.

Skiing in Naeba

One of Japan’s best ‘under the radar’ ski areas, surrounded by the spectacular Japanese Alps,  Naeba and Kagura have something for everyone. Beginners and intermediates will love Naeba’s groomed pistes and modern high-speed lift network. More experienced skiers and snowboarders will be in freeride heaven, with easily accessible off-piste and powder that stays untracked for days after a snowfall.

Our accommodation is ski-in ski-out, and there’s night skiing every evening under floodlights in Naeba until 8:30pm, so you really can maximise your time on the snow.

Exploring Tokyo

Tokyo is like nowhere else on earth - one moment you’re wandering through peaceful temple grounds, and the next, you’re in a neon-lit district packed with arcades, anime stores and high-tech gadgets. Food lovers can enjoy everything from Michelin-starred sushi to steaming bowls of ramen in tucked-away alleyways.

Tokyo is incredibly easy to navigate, with excellent transport links, English signage, and contactless travel cards. You’ll stay at one of our tried and trusted hotels in a central location, and our team can give plenty of advice and recommendations.

When to visit

Tokyo winters are typically dry and mild, while Mt. Naeba has one of the longest ski seasons in Japan, running from December through late April or even May.

For the best chance of experiencing ‘Japow’, December to mid-March are the most consistent months, with snowfall peaking in mid January. April is often good for Spring skiing, and offers the chance to experience cherry blossom season in Tokyo.

"Can you do Japan in a week? YES, you absolutely can. With the unbeatable convenience of Naeba, you’ll be skiing just hours after your flight lands in Tokyo. This Ski Safari itinerary gives you five days in the mountains plus two days of sightseeing in Tokyo for an unforgettable, action-packed week in Japan."

Suggested itinerary

Flights and transfers are included in this Ski & City safari, and are arranged by our expert team. Many of us at Ski Safari regularly travel to Japan, some have previously lived there, and we’ve used our firsthand knowledge to create a day-by-day suggested itinerary to help you make the most of every moment. As with all our trips, this is completely flexible - we’ll tailor your holiday itinerary to suit your group size, budget, skiing ability, or interests.

Days 1 to 2 - London to Naeba

Fly overnight (approx 14 hours) from London Heathrow to Tokyo. Take the airport monorail/rail link to Tokyo Station, then a bullet train (1 hour 15 minutes) to Echigo Yuzawa, where a complimentary shuttle will take you to Naeba Prince Hotel. If you’re keen, you can check in, get changed and hit the slopes under floodlights for a few hours before dinner.

Days 3 to 6 - Skiing in Naeba and Kagura

Your hotel is ski-in ski-out, and rentals, ski school and everything else is on-site, so you can get straight out on the slopes. All the groomed slopes and off-piste runs of Naeba and Kagura are covered on the same list pass, and the resorts are linked by Japan's longest gondola. The hotel has 20 restaurants, onsen baths and plenty of entertainment, while Kagura also has some excellent on-mountain options.

Days 7 to 9 - Tokyo

You'll travel back to Tokyo by bullet train and check in at your hotel - you'll be centrally located so you can explore the city easily. Take the first afternoon and evening to enjoy the famous neon lights, backstreet bars and incredible Tokyo food. The next day, set off to see unique sights such as Meiji Jingu Shrine, Takeshita Street and Shibuya Crossing. We recommend heading to the atmospheric bars of Golden Gai for a real Tokyo local's experience.

Day 9 - Tokyo to London

Head back to Tokyo Haneda and board your flight back to London. Time to rest weary legs from an unforgettable week of skiing and sightseeing.
