Spring is the perfect time to experience Japan. On the mountains, you'll enjoy world-class skiing on a sizeable snowpack that's been building all season, while down in the cities, freshly bloomed cherry blossoms paint the country’s famous landmarks pink. Take advantage of amazing spring conditions both on and off the slopes, and feel as though you’re experiencing two holidays in one.

With 15 metres of snowfall throughout the winter, Niseko’s snow base remains deep in the latter stages of the season. And with regular top-ups once every three days, you can count on plenty of snow when it’s your turn to carve through the resort’s four famous ski areas in late March or early April.

It’s then time for a change in season - swap your ski or snowboard boots for walking shoes and witness the early blooms of the vibrant, pink and white cherry blossoms that sweep across Japan. From Kyoto’s historic temples to Lake Kawaguchi beneath Mt Fuji and the energetic streets of Tokyo, we’ve included some of our favourite must-see locations in Japan.

With a comprehensive suggested itinerary that includes international and internal flights, bullet-train transfers and all the little bits in between, you can tick off significant cultural landmarks and experience a country that comes alive during the spring.

The skiing

Not only will you have more than enough snow under your skis or snowboard come late March or early April, you'll also experience more spring skiing benefits: milder temperatures, sun-drenched slopes and unspoilt views of Mt Yotei.

The terrain itself is spread over four linked ski areas (all accessible on one lift pass) - Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, and Annupuri. Consider yourself an intermediate? You’ll be in your element with a blend of progressive steeps, groomed and off-piste runs at your disposal. As you would expect with four ski areas, there’s great beginner skiing and more testing trails for confident skiers.

Stay in the ever-popular Hirafu Village, the ideal base for this time of year, with excellent value accommodation, and fewer crowds. Hirafu is where the action is with local restaurants, bars, and live music most nights. For quieter nights, take the opportunity to soak in the mineral rich waters found in the local Yukoro Onsen - an authentic experience.

The experience

This ski & city safari makes the most of the shift in climate at this time of year. The second half of your adventure starts once you swap snowy peaks for blossoming landscapes to take in the timeless, iconic landmarks that are at their best during spring.

Begin the transition from winter to spring by flying into Osaka and taking a short bus transfer to Kyoto. Here, 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites are waiting to be explored, including the shimmering Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion). The elegant pink branches that surround Kyoto’s cultural landmarks create an enchanting backdrop exclusive to this time of year. From here, you can also take easy day trips to Nara’s deer park, Kobe for its renowned beef, or Osaka for street food and vibrant nightlife.

From Kyoto, ride the bullet train to Lake Kawaguchi - a vast shimmering pond of perfection that’s filled with the reflection of a snow-dusted Mt Fuji and thousands of dancing pink petals at the peak of cherry blossom season.

End your journey in Tokyo, Japan’s buzzing capital, where you can shop for souvenirs, savour authentic cuisine, flower-filled parks, and vibrant neon streets.

"This is my favourite time of year to combine skiing and sightseeing. When I lived in Japan, the iconic sakura (cherry blossom) provided the perfect end to the ski season - and this itinerary is the best way to see it!"
