Combine the best powder skiing of your life, carving through Niseko’s exceptional, bottomless, fluffy snow, with a thought-provoking journey exploring Japan’s wartime and coastal heritage in Hiroshima and Okinawa. Then spend your final night in ever-advancing Tokyo.

With arguably the best all-round skiing in the world, Niseko offers heaps of powder and diverse terrain that you can explore for five days, as well as the captivating villages of Niseko and Hirafu.

Then, spend two nights in Hiroshima and two nights in Okinawa, visiting landmarks and battlegrounds of World War II. Experience unique Ryukyuan island heritage, excellent food, and explore hidden pockets of historic architecture and serene nature.

Internal flights from Sapporo Chitose (Niseko’s nearest airport) to Hiroshima, and Hiroshima to Okinawa take two hours. Okinawa to Tokyo is a little longer at two and a half. This is the quickest way to travel on this ski & city safari - all logistics are organised by us for you.

The skiing

Averaging 15 metres of snowfall each winter, Niseko is the place to go for almost guaranteed powder, immaculately groomed pistes, and some of the world’s finest backcountry guided experiences. For those who want soft snow on corduroy slopes, the four resorts that make up the 2,191-acre Niseko United Ski Area won’t fail to deliver. Meandering and cruisy runs abound; there is more than enough to keep every skier/snowboarder of every ability occupied.

The experience

After five days of amazing skiing in Niseko, your eye-opening historical journey starts in Hiroshima, which was levelled in 1945. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is one of Japan’s most significant landmarks, next to the Atomic Bomb Dome - the only building that avoided destruction - now symbolic of strength, resilience and hope. Meanwhile, Hiroshima’s dining scene is one of Japan’s best-kept secrets, and if you’re exploring on foot, there are several shrines, parks and gardens to visit too.

Okinawa Island, to the south of mainland Japan (Honshu), has a distinct Ryukyuan culture and its own languages and dialects. The island was strongly influenced by the traditions of the Ryukyu Kingdom that ruled between the 15th and 19th centuries, and is renowned for its music, dance and crafts scene, and white, sandy beaches. One of Japan’s bloodiest World War II battles occurred at Okinawa, and the Peace Memorial Museum tastefully tells the story.

Wrap up your ski & city in Tokyo, Japan’s capital city that never sleeps. With multiple, bustling districts that merge deep-rooted traditions with modern and cutting-edge tech, Tokyo is a fascinating experience for all the senses.

"Ski the deepest, lightest snow imaginable in Niseko, followed by a reflective journey through the historically significant cities of Hiroshima and Okinawa. This serene experience combines peaceful powder turns with tales of resilience and endurance."

Suggested itinerary

Histories of Japan Ski & City Safari can be tailor-made to suit your needs. Whether you go in winter or spring, each season has its own exceptional experience. January to March provides full “Japow” conditions, while in mid-to-late March, the cities are mild, with a higher chance of seeing the spring Sakura blooms. Read our sample itinerary for inspiration.

Day 1 to 2 - Travel to Niseko

Fly overnight from London via Tokyo to Niseko's nearest airport, Sapporo Chitose, located on Japan's northern island, Hokkaido. A transfer will take you on the two-and-a-half-hour journey to the resort, where you can check into your accommodation.

Days 2 to 7 - Ski Niseko

Spend five days cruising around Niseko, Japan's largest ski resort, made up of four distinct ski areas: Annupuri, Niseko Village, Niseko Hirafu and Hanazono. Enjoy Niseko's vast and diverse terrain and immense powder, where you can ski perfectly smooth groomers to off-piste tree skiing. Niseko also boasts incredible backcountry wilderness, which we recommend exploring with a guide.

Day 8 - Travel to Hiroshima

Return to Sapporo Chitose and fly to Hiroshima. From Hiroshima Airport, the limousine bus to Hiroshima takes about 50 minutes. Check in to your hotel, and head out for some food. Hiroshima has spectacular cuisine to offer. Our favourites include the Okonomiyaki (Hiroshima-style) savoury pancakes, packed with noodles and layers of vegetables and meat/seafood. The Kaki (oysters) are particularly good too, and the Momiji Manju (a chocolate or custard-filled treat) is a popular regional souvenir.

Days 8 to 9 - Explore Hiroshima

Two nights in Hiroshima - visit the historical landmarks of the Peace Memorial and museum and Atomic Bomb Dome. With some clever planning, we recommend including the short ferry ride to Miyajima Island. Here you'll discover Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the floating Torii gate. Expect stunning views, nature and peaceful hiking opportunities.

Day 10 - Travel to Okinawa

Return to Hiroshima Airport and fly to the island of Okinawa. Once you arrive in Okinawa, hop on the 15-minute monorail or bus to Naha city centre. We recommend staying here for its convenience to the island’s historical attractions. Visit one of the nearby white-sand beaches. A sunset stroll alongside the seashore permits a moment to relax and reflect on your travels so far. We recommend  Mibaru Beach, easily accessible by bus from Naha.

Day 10 to 11 - Explore Okinawa

Two nights in Okinawa - visit the Islands Peace Memorial Museum, then settle into island life and experience the Ryukuan culture. Head to Shurijo Castle, the Royal Palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It is still being carefully restored after being partly destroyed in a fire, but it still shows a fine example of Ryukuan architecture that blends Chinese and Japanese influences.

Day 12 - Stay in Tokyo

Head to Okinawa Naha Airport and fly to Tokyo. Enjoy a final afternoon and evening in this megacity. Despite the city’s size, you can do and see a lot in a few hours. The Shinjuku area is famous for its shopping, electronics and entertainment. Head to Shibuya and walk over the iconic Shibuya Zebra Crossing and eat with the locals in one of the thousands of Yakitori restaurants.

Day 13 - Home

Fly from Tokyo back to the UK.
