From snow to sashimi, ridgelines to ramen, our Flavours of Japan Ski & City Safari is the ultimate holiday for those who want to experience authentic Japanese food culture with incredible skiing.

Starting in the powder mecca, Niseko, on the snow-blanketed island of Hokkaido, you’ll have no issue satisfying your palate after carving through some of the best tree runs on Earth.

Then, you’ll travel by planes, (bullet) trains and automobiles to three unique gastronomic hubs: Kobe, famed for its buttery, melt-in-your-mouth wagyu beef; Osaka, Japan’s neon-lit food capital, with bold flavours and regional specialities; and Tokyo, Japan’s dazzling capital, with more Michelin-starred restaurants than anywhere else in the world.

The skiing

Often exceeding 15 metres of snowfall each winter, Niseko is a top destination for powder hounds, groomed trail enthusiasts and backcountry adventurers alike. Four seamlessly linked resorts make up the Niseko United area - all accessible on the same ski pass. From wide, mellow runs covered in soft, corduroy snow, to vast tree skiing in the deepest powder, there's something here for every ability and style.

The experience

Stay in tranquil Niseko Village or buzzing Hirafu Village, near the local restaurants, bars, live music and nightlife. Niseko has a diverse food scene, from local izakaya-style dining (a selection of small plates) to fine dining. Expect everything from hearty bowls of steaming miso ramen and locally caught seafood to gourmet Western-Japanese fusion cuisine.

After five thrilling days on Niseko’s slopes, journey to Kobe. Set between a picturesque harbour and the Mount Rokko Mountains, the city is a stunning location for exploring centuries-old shrines, temples, and forest trails. Kobe is famed in the culinary world for its beef, a very marbled and succulent type of premium wagyu - you'll find it served everywhere!

Next, it’s on to the energetic and neon-lit streets of Osaka, crammed with a range of affordable restaurants, food markets and street vendors. Dotonbori, the epicentre of it all, offers sights and irresistible flavours that pull you in and keep you wandering (and grazing) for hours. Try the takoyaki, a popular dish of octopus-filled balls that originated in Osaka.

Tokyo delivers the perfect finale: a high-energy explosion of street food, gourmet dining, and electric city life. For Tokyo dining ideas, check out our blog, One Night in Tokyo: Where to Eat, Drink and the Most Thrilling Way to Explore.

"Ski and eat your way across Japan, diving into deep powder snow on the northern island, followed by delicious local food on the mainland. It’s an absolute must for skiers and snowboarders who like to explore a new country with their taste buds."

Suggested itinerary

Our Flavours of Japan Ski & City Safari can be tailor-made to suit your needs. Visit in winter or spring - each season has its own exceptional experience. The cities are quieter in winter, making it easier to enjoy popular dishes and hearty street food without the crowds. January to March provides full “Japow” conditions, while in late March, you might catch the cherry blossom, celebrated with Sakura-themed sweets. See our sample itinerary for inspiration.

Days 1 to 2 - Travel to Niseko

Fly overnight from London to Tokyo, followed by an internal flight to Sapporo Chitose on Japan’s northern island. Take a two-and-a-half-hour transfer to Niseko, where you’ll check into your accommodation.

Days 2 to 7 - Six nights in Niseko

Immerse yourself in unrivalled snow in Japan’s largest ski resort, with all four ski areas offering incredible night skiing until 7pm. Explore immaculately groomed pistes or weave in and out of trees for powder skiing. To make the most of the area’s best terrain and backcountry, we recommend hiring a guide. Niseko's dining scene blends fresh Hokkaido ingredients with international flair that attracts world-class chefs. Look out for sweet crab hotpot, fresh scallops, gyoza dumplings and yakitori (grilled meats, usually chicken) - very moreish!

Day 8 - Travel to Kobe

Transfer back to Sapporo and fly to Osaka Itami Airport. The limousine bus from the airport to Kobe takes about 40 minutes. In the evening, enjoy Kobe’s inventive takes on classic Japanese street food - we recommend Sobameshi, a local twist on okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes) made with noodles and rice. Relax with a glass of sake, locally brewed in nearby towns, or taste Kobe’s famous cheesecake for a sweet treat.

Days 8 to 9 - Explore Kobe

The port city of Kobe is world-famous for its marbled beef, served in every form imaginable. For a truly traditional experience, dine at Royal Mouriya, Kobe’s most prestigious steakhouse, serving premium cuts since 1885. Stroll around the scenic harbour, wander through serene forested mountain paths, or ride the Rokkō Cable Car up into the Mount Rokko Range for panoramic views. Don’t miss the Ikuta Shrine, one of Japan’s oldest.

Days 10 to 11 - Feasting in Osaka

Osaka is a 20-minute train journey from Kobe. We recommend visiting iconic landmarks like Osaka Castle and Kuromon Market during the day. By night, head to Dotonbori, a blaze of neon lights and giant food-themed decorations. It's the heart of Osaka’s street food paradise. Every corner will tempt you with something delicious. Sample Osaka’s original takoyaki - golden balls of octopus with a rich sauce and bonito flakes. Or torikara (Japanese fried chicken) - juicy, crispy and impossible to resist.

Day 12 - Bullet train to Tokyo

From Osaka, board the iconic Shinkansen - or bullet train - an unforgettable ride for the final leg of your adventure. Sit back, relax, and glide at over 200 mph through a spectacular landscape to Tokyo. Sit on the left side for a chance to catch a glimpse of majestic Mount Fuji. Check into your hotel, and head out to explore endless sights and feast your way through Tokyo’s street food. Fill up on okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes), freshly made sushi and bao, or indulge in the colourful mochi on display.

Day 13 - Fly home

After your final night in Tokyo, it's time to transfer back to Tokyo Haneda Airport and fly back to London.
