Repeatedly voted Norway's Best Ski Resort (2019 to 2025) by the World Ski Awards, the conditions in Geilo (pronounced yay low) are world-class for beginners and families. The two ski areas of Geilo and Vestlia are linked by a free ski bus and boast unintimidating slopes, helpful lift attendants and an award-winning ski school. Children under seven ski for free and the crèche takes babies from six months.

Arriving on one of the world's most scenic railways makes a memorable start, with the Bergen to Oslo line stopping in the village centre. This makes it easy to add a city stopover, visit the fjords or experience the dramatic Flåm Railway.

One of Norway's oldest resorts, Geilo fringes the country's largest national park. Experiencing nature is part of the appeal, with dog sledding, fat biking, ice fishing and a tree-top ropes course, as well as cross-country trails and the Langedrag Nature Park & Mountain Farm.

Most amenities are clustered around Geilo station. Restaurant-wise, there's plenty of choice from pizzas to local game and seafood. Families love the Bowl & Dine, while après bars are busiest on weekends, and Off-Pist and Recepten are best for nightlife.

"As an ex-ski instructor who lived and worked in Geilo for five seasons, this is where I'd take my family skiing for the first time - superb ski tuition, amazing childcare and genuine hospitality. What more do you need?"

Accommodation in Geilo

With unmistakable Scandinavian style, popular accommodation in Geilo includes the impressive ski-in ski-out Vestlia Resort, cosy Forest Cabins with log fires & saunas dotted throughout the woodlands, and the famous Dr. Holms Hotel, which is steeped in history.

Geilo was a pleasant resort town. We stayed on one side of the valley and enjoyed our skiing; if we had spent more time there then we would have also checked out the Vestlia side. The skiing was nice. The resort is fairly reliant on button lifts/t-bars, which was a bit tiring for the older member of our party. The cross-country skiing taster session was also lovely and highly recommended.

A great resort for beginners. Great snow conditions and not very busy on the slopes, even though it was Easter break.

My first visit to Norway. I knew we would not be getting cute wooden chalets in a spectacular setting but Geilo was a real town that seemed pleasant and friendly and had all the shops and supermarkets you could want. With snow everywhere it is in a pretty setting, It was a slight disadvantage that the area was split into 2 areas linked by frequent ski buses. We stayed in Vestlia which was fantasti…

Geilo was a superb resort. There were more than enough restaurants for our 4 night stay, all of which were of a great standard. There were also a number of supermarkets for self catering. The buses to and from the ski centres were regular and quick. Geilo was a small town and easy to get around

We first came to Geilo to Cross Country ski over 30 years ago. Since then we have been to Fefor, Susjoen, Betostolen in Norwy, once to Finland and once from France to Switzerland. Apart from those 5 venues, we keep coming back to Geilo, as we are comfortable with Geilo, especially now we are in ou 80s

Excellent hotel and perfect resort for us, with quiet slopes that are just challenging enough.

This is our 3rd visit to Geilo, the first two many years ago when our sons were first learning to ski. This time possibly the last family holiday our 3 sons will want to spend with the "oldies"! Although when it's a freebie who knows. It worked well for a mixed bag of snow boarders/skiers and snowshoeing. It's not got the massive length and variety of runs you might find in France etc. but the qu…
