Flåm (pronounced Flom) is spectacular all year round. While it’s one of Norway's top summer attractions, the secret is to visit in winter when you can appreciate the colossal snow-dusted mountains and tranquil, glassy fjord waters without the crowds - it’s truly enchanting!
It's easy to add a one or two-night stay in Flåm to a ski holiday in Myrkdalen, Geilo and Voss, due to how accessible the village is. You’ll travel across impressive, snowy landscapes from western Norway on the iconic Bergen Railway - one of the most scenic train journeys in the world - before a two-hour boat journey through the fjords to reach the village, as included on our Ski & Fjord Explorer Ski Safari.
The Norwegian fjords here (called Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord) are UNESCO World Heritage-listed and a magnificent sight to behold. The charming village is nestled at the foot of the mountain and is a great base to explore the icy waters of the fjords. You can even take to the water on a leisurely, two-hour sightseeing cruise on an electrically powered boat from Flåm to Gudvangen (home to The Viking Village open-air museum). Alternatively, you could jump on an exhilarating high-speed RIB ride and guided tour.
In the village itself, you will find the station for the Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) - this is what Flåm is most famous for! The 20km steep track hugs the mountainside as it climbs, passes through 20 tunnels and rolls alongside rocky gorges, frozen waterfalls and beautiful snowy countryside. Flåm Railway has been voted one of the best railway attractions in the world and is an unforgettable experience.
If you’d prefer to stretch your legs, snowshoes can be hired from Flåm village for exploring the area on foot. For the best spot to take it all in, head to the Stegastein Viewpoint, 650 metres above the Aurlansfjord. The viewing platform projects 30 metres out from the mountainside for unrivalled panoramic landscape views.

- The Flåm Railway - a world-famous train line with incredible views running from Myrdal to Flåm.
- Fjord Cruise on the UNESCO Nærøyfjord - take a peaceful sightseeing cruise along the Nærøyfjord between Flåm and Gudvangen, which takes about two hours. If you’d prefer, there is a shuttle bus service from Gudvangen to Flåm instead of returning via ferry.
- Stegastein Viewpoint - located 650 metres above the Aurlandsfjord, with sensational panoramic views for some truly unique photos.
- FjordSafari - take an exhilarating RIB tour through the heart of the Aurlandsfjord and some of the most beautiful scenery in Norway, learning about the history of the area from a knowledgeable guide.
- Snowshoe Hike - enjoy a guided hike up the surrounding mountains to the Stegastein Viewpoint.

- Flåm Railway Museum - found next to the platform you arrive on, take a look at the construction process of the famous railway. With free entrance, it’s well worth a visit.
- The Viking Village: Njardarheimr - located at the end of the Nærøyfjord fjord cruise Gudvangen, don your Viking armour and step back in time with typical Viking activities such as axe throwing and archery. It is a great family attraction for all ages.
- Flåm Church - constructed in 1667, the wooden church is a short 3 km walk from Flåm village.
