A former Olympic host, this wooded resort has the biggest vertical drop in Norway. For a tranquil retreat, it’s a great discovery.

Less than two hours from Oslo, the little resort of Norefjell (pronounced Nora-Fee-Yell) hosted the Winter Olympics in 1952. Since then, it’s stayed relatively under the radar - we think it’s well worth rediscovering.

In a wooded section of the Scandes Mountains, the ski area has Norway’s greatest vertical drop - you can ski all the way from the summit to fjord below. Although the black pistes are some of Norway’s steepest, most of the terrain is better suited to beginners and improvers. And with the ski school managed by Norway's former national ski team coach, learners are in good hands.

The ski-in ski-out accommodation sits at mid-altitude, so you can slide downhill each morning, or catch a lift to the summit. Off the slopes, the focus is on winter activities - such as ice-skating and indoor climbing - rather than après drinking. This makes ski holidays in Norefjell a great choice for families.

Every holiday is tailor-made, just for you.

Very enjoyable - arrangements were great and was just what we wanted - Norefjell may have been remote, but it was magical. The skiing area was small by European standards, but varied - It was nice being able to ski as a family group from the very top 1300m ish to the bottom 160m ish just skiing Blues & Greens, if we wanted to, without needing to take a lift - & even at Easter we skied/boarded over some virgin powder / snow... with very few people on the slopes... looking at some very beautiful panoramas - Perfect.

We were not really in the resort but in a resort hotel on its own. It was the end of the season and the slopes were empty which was great. We had a ski instructor for 1.5 hours each morning which was perfect. We only had two days but the resort was perfect for the time we had.
