Japan is renowned for its phenomenal deep, fluffy powder and is fast becoming a magnet for powder hunters and blizzard chasers alike. If you’re planning to make the journey for the first time and yearn not only for an immense ski experience but the traditions and wonders that make Japan such a unique destination, then this ski safari will absolutely scratch that itch.

You'll ski some of the world's best snow in Niseko, absorb ancient Japan in Kyoto and experience the awesome nightlife of Tokyo. You’ll race across the country on a bullet train and have plenty of opportunity to try some of Japan’s best food along the way - all bucket-list stuff, and we will help you tick it off! Do this ski safari in mid-March, and you may also witness the mass arrival of pink cherry blossoms - a world-famous, popular natural phenomenon. During this time, pristine snow conditions can still be enjoyed despite the sunnier weather.

The skiing

Averaging 15 meters each winter, the seemingly endless snow dumps in Niseko are loved by experienced skiers. However, the terrain itself is mostly intermediate and the Niseko Village and Annupuri areas offer some great beginner skiing too. Whatever your level, you'll enjoy getting stuck into some serious snow in this acclaimed powder playground.

The experience

After you've spent a week skiing, you’ll head to Kyoto for two days to experience traditional Japan. You'll visit old craft shops and tea houses, stroll along the Philosopher's Path, see Buddhist temples, the Shogun castles and the Imperial Palace, and of course sample some extraordinary Japanese cuisine.

Travelling on this trip becomes a highlight in itself as you head for Tokyo on the famous bullet train (Shinkansen). Leaving Kyoto, you'll whizz past city suburbs, rice fields and alpine foothills while relaxing in 200mph lightning-speed luxury towards the Japanese capital. Top tip: before you board, pick up one of the thousands of bento boxes available at the train station to enjoy lunch on your journey.

Tokyo is a megacity that never stops, and we highly recommend staying in Shinjuku City, where you'll find buzzing karaoke clubs, towering skyscrapers, neon lights and the bizarre but fascinating tiny bars of Golden Gai - take a seat and go with the flow! If you prefer calmer surroundings, you can escape the crowds by heading to one of the dozens of temples and peaceful gardens.

When to visit

Our Taste of Japan Ski Safari can be enjoyed in winter and spring, with each season providing its own exceptional experience.

January to February is the best period for full-on powder skiing, with each month averaging 25 snow days. At this time of year, Kyoto and Tokyo are generally quieter, which enhances their tranquil atmosphere, and they look particularly magical with a dusting of snow.

Mid to late March marks the arrival of spring. You can still ski a wonderfully deep snowpack and perfect snow conditions, with the occasional powder day. If you’re here for the cherry blossoms, then a walk along the Philosopher's Path in Kyoto is an awesome place to take it all in.

For a glimpse of what this safari is like in December, read our trip report: Sampling a new country with the Taste of Japan Ski Safari to see how much he and his Ski Safari team members enjoyed pre-Christmas skiing in Niseko.

"This ski safari provides the perfect taste of Japan. By visiting Niseko, Kyoto & Tokyo you'll experience deep powder, rich culture, delicious cuisine and super-fast transit on the bullet train."

Suggested itinerary

All of our holidays are tailor-made to suit your dates and requirements. Here is a sample itinerary to show how the resorts might best be combined.

Day 1 to 2

Travel from London to Niseko. Fly overnight via Tokyo from London to Sapporo Chitose on Japan’s northern island. Then it’s a two-and-a-half-hour transfer to Niseko, where you’ll check into your accommodation.

Days 2 to 8

Six nights in Niseko - Discover Japan’s largest ski resort and delight in unrivalled powder. Explore the four ski areas, all accessible on one lift pass, and rack up the ski miles with incredible night skiing available until 7pm. Wind your way down immaculately groomed pistes, ducking between trees, and bounce over powder. To make the most of the area’s best backcountry, we recommend hiring a guide.

Day 8

Travel to Kyoto - transfer back to Sapporo and fly to Osaka Itami Airport. Take the limousine bus direct from Osaka Itami Airport to Kyoto Station, or local train which takes around 65 minutes.

Days 8 to 11

Stay three nights in Kyoto – immerse yourself in old-world Japan, by visiting  old craft shops and tea rooms, or find peace and tranquillity in the city’s many gardens and shrines. To experience traditional architecture in all its splendour, we recommend visiting the Fushimi Inari Shrine. To savour the culinary delights that Kyoto is famous for, head to the 400-year-old Nishiki Market.

Day 11

Bullet train to Tokyo – kick back and relax on Japan’s iconic transport. The route will whizz you along the coast at 200 mph! The Nozomi train is the fastest, taking you to Tokyo in just 2 hours and 20 minutes. Top tip: before setting off at high speed, grab a bento box at Kyoto Station for a tasty to-go meal.

Days 11 to 13

Two nights in Tokyo. Stay in Shinjuku City (Tokyo) for a super sensory metropolitan experience like no other. Visit Meiji Jingu Shrine during the day, marvel at Takeshita Street (Japan's version of Carnaby Street) and, if you really want to see just how bustling a city can get, head for the famous Shibuya Crossing. Enjoy the lively restaurant culture in Shinjuku City and finish off in Golden Gai, a backstreet collection of tiny bars, each with its own charm.

Day 13

Time to leave - Head back to Tokyo Haneda and board your flight back to London, taking the time to rest weary legs from two weeks of skiing and sightseeing.
