Japan is a cultural wonderland, ripe for exploration. Not only will our Traditions of Japan Ski & City Safari lead you to world-class powder skiing, it also showcases ancient customs, art and architecture, revealing how deep-rooted traditions have combined with modern-day Japan.

For five days, roam Niseko’s incredible terrain and sugar-soft powder, with enough variation to keep all levels of skiers and snowboarders entertained. Enjoy post-ski traditions like a soak in one of Niseko's natural spring onsen, and sleep in cosy, ryokan-inspired accommodation.

Over the following four days, you'll visit Japan's cultural capital of Kyoto and Kanazawa’s preserved geisha and samurai districts, shrouded in Edo-era charm and home to tranquil gardens and thousands of temples and shrines.

Finally, board the iconic Shinkansen (bullet train) to Tokyo, where ancient streets are tucked beneath towering skyscrapers - a striking reminder of Japan’s harmony between past and present.

The skiing

Niseko enjoys, on average, 15 metres of the lightest, fluffiest snowfall each season. Overlooked by mighty Mt Yotei, the four resorts of the Niseko United Ski Area are world-famous for endless powder and incredible tree skiing that all levels can experience. Each area has something unique to offer, and we recommend reading our Niseko Resort Guide for details on the best runs.

You can also immerse yourself in the area’s vast, pristine wilderness beyond the resort, with backcountry skiing. A guide is always recommended, which we can organise for you.

The experience

Step back in time and wander the narrow streets of Kyoto and Kanazawa. Kyoto, Japan's once imperial capital, is the birthplace of Japanese arts, including tea ceremonies, kimono fabric weaving and kaiseki cuisine.

Kanazawa, known as “Little Kyoto”, is an enchanting city with well-preserved Edo-era architecture, a rich samurai history and artisan crafts. It attracts visitors for its gold leaf ice cream, teahouses and celebrated Kenroku-en garden. There's plenty to explore as you spend two nights in each location. You may even glimpse a geisha! From here, you can take a day trip to the nearby fairytale village of Shirakawa-go, famous for its triangular thatched roofs, which are lit up at night.

For a truly Japanese sleeping experience, you'll stay in an authentic ryokan while visiting Kyoto. These traditional B&Bs have rooms furnished with low wooden furniture, sliding shoji doors and tatami mat floors. Elegant, minimalist design, virtually unchanged for hundreds of years. Meanwhile, in Niseko and Kanazawa, accommodation ranges from simple apartments to spacious hotel suites.

Catapulting into Japan's futuristic capital, you'll travel to Tokyo in style and comfort on the iconic Shinkansen (bullet train). Tokyo is a remarkable fusion of old and new, where centuries-old temples and historic neighbourhoods coexist beside cutting-edge technology and modern architecture. Tokyo is your last stop before you travel home.

"This ski & city safari is the perfect way to explore Japan’s winter wonderland and discover its traditions, both past and present. Staying in a ryokan in Kyoto and Shirakawa-go’s snow-covered village was an experience I’ll never forget."

Suggested itinerary

Our Traditions of Japan Ski & City Safari can be enjoyed in winter or spring. January to mid-March is Niseko’s prime powder skiing window, and Kyoto and Kanazawa are quieter, adding to their serene atmosphere. By late March, expect more bluebird ski days, while the spring cherry blossoms start to open in the cities. Picture this holiday with our suggested itinerary.

Day 1 - Travel to Niseko

Fly overnight from London to Sapporo Chitose (via Tokyo) on Japan’s northern island. Then it’s a two-and-a-half-hour transfer to Niseko, where you’ll check into your accommodation.

Days 2-7 - Six nights in Niseko

Carve through Japan’s largest ski resort, renowned for its exceptional snow conditions. With one lift pass, you can explore Niseko's four interconnected ski areas and enjoy night skiing available until 7pm. Whether you're carving through perfectly groomed trails or chasing legendary powder through the trees, there's terrain for every style. For the ultimate adventure, consider hiring a guide to access the best runs and backcountry spots.

Day 7 - Travel to Kyoto

Transfer back to Sapporo and fly to Osaka Itami. Take the limousine bus directly to Kyoto. Arrive at your ryokan accommodation and soak in the hot spring baths for a truly authentic Japanese tradition. Don’t miss the chance to savour kaiseki, a beautifully crafted multi-course dinner that celebrates seasonal, local ingredients in true Japanese style.

Days 7-9 - Two nights in Kyoto

Offered in several of the ryokans in Kyoto, learn the practice of making matcha tea - a timeless Japanese ceremony - and wear the ceremonial attire to complement the etiquette of the occasion. Enjoy some of the 1,800 temples, shrines and famous gardens on offer, especially the Fushimi Inari Shrine found close to the city centre. Walk through more than four km of impressive red ‘torii gates’, that were donated to the shrine, for a fantastic photo.

Day 9 - Stay in Kanazawa

It's a two-hour train journey from Kyoto to Kanazawa. Stroll through the historic streets to Kenrokuen Garden, ranked as one of Japan’s most beautiful gardens. Visit the Nomura-ke Samurai House, a famous Samurai residence rich with historical artefacts. Kanazawa is also one of Japan’s top destinations for seafood lovers, due to its proximity to the coast, so indulge in one of the city’s exceptional seafood restaurants or visit Omicho Market for fresh sushi/sashimi.

Day 10 - Shirakawa-go

Take an optional day trip to Shirakawa-go - a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels straight out of a fairytale. This picturesque mountain village is filled with steep, thatched-roof gassho-zukuri farmhouses, frozen in time. We recommend the guided tour with an English-speaking guide that includes transport from Kanazawa Bus Station and free entry to Zuisenji Temple.

Day 11 - Bullet train to Tokyo

Head to Kanazawa Station and enjoy the four-hour 200-mph journey on the famous bullet train to Tokyo. Sit on the left of the train to spot Mt. Fuji as you glide into the capital. Your final night in Tokyo, Japan’s dynamic capital, is where ancient tradition and futuristic energy coexist in perfect harmony. Spend your afternoon visiting Asakusa and the iconic Senso-ji Temple, followed by a peaceful stroll through the Imperial Palace Gardens. Or enjoy nature at Shinjuku Gyoen or Yoyogi Park.

Day 12 - Fly home

Transfer back to Tokyo Haneda Airport and fly back to the UK.
