Naeba Ski Resort has terrain for all abilities and is connected to the backcountry thrills of neighbouring Kagura Ski Resort, forming the expansive ‘Mt Naeba’ ski area. The two resorts share a lift pass and are seamlessly connected by the iconic 5.5km ‘Dragondola’, the longest gondola in Japan.

With approximately 7 metres of snowfall in Naeba and up to 10 metres in Kagura, Mt. Naeba is renowned for its reliable powder, exceptional tree skiing, and diverse terrain.

From gentle beginner slopes to long, wide groomers and easy-access powder runs, Naeba offers a fantastic variety of mixed-ability terrain. Kagura presents the perfect opportunity to experience the famous 'Japow', with challenging off-piste steeps and wide-open tree sections. Combined, Mt. Naeba delivers an unforgettable skiing experience, supported by a modern and extensive lift system.

With the transfer from Tokyo taking just 2.5 hours via the Shinkansen bullet train, and night skiing that's available until 8pm, this is the only resort on our Japan programme where you can land and ski on the same day!

Mt. Naeba also boasts one of the longest ski seasons in Japan, running from December through late April or even May, making it ideal for spring skiing. Plus, by skiing in April, you'll have a much higher chance of experiencing the beauty of cherry blossom season if you choose to add on a city stay. And thanks to its location, skiing in Naeba means it's seamless to add on a city stay to your holiday in Tokyo and Kyoto.

Naeba is also perfectly positioned for a multi-resort Japan ski safari, with multiple options less than a half day's travel away.

"Set in the snowy mountains of Niigata on Japan’s main island of Honshu, and just a short journey from Tokyo, it's obvious to me why the Japanese choose to ski at Mt. Naeba - quiet slopes, big snowfall, terrain for all abilities and an amazing full-service hotel."

The easiest route is to fly direct from London Heathrow to Tokyo Haneda (approx. 14 hours) and then transfer to the centre of Tokyo, where you'll travel by Japan’s high-speed Shinkansen bullet train to Echigo-Yuzawa Station (1 hour 15 mins). From there, it's just a short ~30 minute transfer to Naeba Ski Resort. This journey makes Naeba one of Japan’s most accessible major ski areas, and takes 2 hours 30 minutes overall from the airport.

Tokyo Haneda Airport.

Ride the Shinkansen bullet train for 1 hour 15 minutes to Echigo-Yuzawa Station, and then take a ~30 minute transfer to Naeba.

Naeba and Kagura typically open in late November, dependent on snow.

Due to the higher elevation slopes and sheer amount of snow, the season often extends into May.

Naeba runs on Japan Standard Time (JST), which is 8 hours ahead of the UK during British Summer Time (BST) and 9 hours ahead during Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Yes! Ski resorts such as Madarao and Nozawa Onsen are only a few hours away, and Naeba is easily accessible from Tokyo via the Shinkansen bullet train and a short resort transfer. Plus, cities like Kyoto and Osaka sit within a half-day's travel, meaning Naeba is well positioned for a Japan ski safari or Japan ski & city safari.

Yes, Naeba is excellent for families. In fact, a large proportion of the local market that skis here are families. The resort has a selection of cruisey green runs and everything on the doorstep of the full-service, ski-in ski-out Naeba Prince Hotel. You can find out more about what there is for kids in our Naeba Resort Guide.

While Naeba is a popular ski resort in Japan and a great place to experience Japanese culture, the staff are accustomed to serving international guests. In practice, you’ll be able to get by with English for the essentials. As with anywhere in Japan, it’s important to be mindful of local customs, including onsen etiquette, removing shoes in certain settings, and general respectful behaviour in shared spaces. Our team has extensive experience in Japan, including having lived there, and we’re on hand to help you navigate the culture with ease.
