Travel through some of America's most jaw-dropping scenery as you drive from the desert city of Reno to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to ski three brilliant resorts - Northstar, Heavenly and Kirkwood - all on one incredibly affordable lift pass.

You don't need deep pockets to access some of the USA’s deepest snow thanks to the Tahoe Value Pass, which provides access to a combined 10,000+ acres of terrain across the three resorts for just £459pp.

Lake Tahoe receives reliably high annual snowfall, blanketing the mountains with an average of six to ten metres of deep and very dry snow. The terrain provides generous skiing options for all ability levels, making this an excellent holiday destination for groups.

Your first stop is cruisey and quiet Northstar, boasting an impressive 3,170 skiable acres (more than Breckenridge) and one of the fastest lifts in America. The resort goes all out to create a friendly atmosphere with traditions such as 'Tost with a view' (complimentary mid-mountain champagne) and daily free s'mores at 4pm in the village. Save money by opting for the nearby mountain town of Truckee, full of character and echoes of its Old West heritage. We recommend staying in the stunning 4* Gravity Haus Truckee, a modern yet authentic lodging experience with the phenomenal Stella Truckee restaurant.

From Northstar, you'll drive a spectacular journey south along the lake's eastern shore to Heavenly. This huge resort (a staggering 4,800 acres!) straddles the California and Nevada state line and receives over six metres of snowfall annually. 80% of this giant is classed as intermediate, and they have widened several runs in recent years, allowing plenty more space for Super-G turns while soaking in the California sun. The sweeping views of the lake below are also spectacular. On the weekend, you can kick your skis off and let your hair down with DJ Snow Cat playing weekend sets from 12pm at the bottom of Comet and Dipper throughout the season. We recommend staying in the lively lakeside town of South Lake Tahoe directly below, where a short walk along Lake Tahoe Boulevard will take you past the array of bars, restaurants, casinos and authentic converted motels.

Your final stop, Kirkwood, turns up the dial on wild, steep rides. This relatively unknown ski area offers some of the most authentic freeride terrain outside of Alaska. But it’s not all steep - there are some wonderfully fun, green and blue groomed runs to enjoy too. The Sunrise Chair offers access to amazing intermediate and advanced in-bounds off-piste riding and skiing, and The Wall, a challenging descent with a vertical drop start, is there to test the best of us - we know, we've tried it!

Skiing in Lake Tahoe offers the ultimate road-tripping, powder skiing, bucket-list experience: true American skiing at its finest.

"This is American road tripping at its best. Incredibly diverse and exciting terrain coupled with deep, deep snow and authentic mountain towns along the way. You can’t beat the bargain lift pass that allows you to ski at Northstar, Heavenly and Kirkwood (that's well over 10,000 skiable acres) for only £459pp! Yee-haw!"

Suggested itinerary

This itinerary is our suggestion of how you could divide your time between skiing, sightseeing and outdoor adventures.

Day 1

Touch down in Reno early evening, collect your SUV and hit the open road on a stunning hour-long drive through the desert to Truckee, ten minutes from Northstar. Check-in at the 4* Gravity Haus. After a quick dinner, take the time to familiarise yourself with the town or catch an early night.

Day 2

Enjoy a sublime breakfast at the Stella Truckee (a Ski Safari favourite) and then drive 10 minutes to Northstar for your first ski day. Warm up with long greens like Lumberjack before heading up the Comstock Express and skiing down Mt Pluto’s East Ridge and dropping into Powder Bowl, The Chute or Dutchman for some fast, well-pitched blue runs. Don't forget to grab your complimentary glass of champagne at Toast at 1.30pm before grabbing some lunch at the Summit Smokehouse for BBQ dishes with more magnificent views of Lake Tahoe. Finish the day with toasted marshmallows at the firepits before heading to Truckee to drink with the locals in one of the authentic bars along Donner Pass Road. Old Street Tap or Bar of America are both great choices.

Day 3

Check out of your hotel and then head to Northstar for a second day of skiing. Now you've found your ski legs, it's time to ski every black run off the backside. Iron Horse, Polaris, The Rapids and Burn Out are quiet, long, exhilarating and immaculately groomed. Once the lifts shut, leave North Lake Tahoe and drive south along the eastern shore to Heavenly. The drive would take just over an hour, but the scenery and beaches (especially Sand Harbor) are worth stopping for, so grant yourself more time. Check in at the 3* Hotel Becket.

Days 4 to 12

Spend a week in Heavenly and experience the contrasting views of the Nevada desert and Lake Tahoe whilst you enjoy world-class skiing. There are dozens of intermediate runs to enjoy; take the Sky Express or Canyon Express for smooth blues like Liz’s, Canyonland and High Five or take the Tamarack, Dipper or Comet Express for wider, rolling runs. Prime powder terrain includes Ellie’s black run or the huge area of Ski Ways Glades, and for steep terrain, we suggest the Milky Way Bowl. The signature run - Gunbarrel - is long, mogully and challenging. Master this and your lakeside après cocktail will taste even sweeter. Off the mountain in Heavenly Village, we recommend catching a show at the new Tahoe Blue Event Center or paying a visit to the areas iconic casinos. For more skiing, Northstar, Kirkwood, Diamond Peak and Sierra-at-Tahoe are all within an hour's drive. You'll need a day pass for the latter two.

Days 13 to 14

It’s onward from Heavenly, checking out early and continuing south to the more remote Kirkwood for two nights at the 3* Mountain Club. Get to grips with some exhilarating freeride skiing by tackling runs one at a time, starting on the Snowkirk and Solitude lifts, before deciding whether to take on the experts-only The Wall. There are several alpine freeride routes to weave through, such as the well-pitched terrain of Fawn Ridge and in-bounds semi-off-piste runs like Upper Devils Draw. Advanced skiers would benefit from Expedition Kirkwood which utilises Kirkwood's varied terrain to take your skiing and riding to the next level.

Day 15

After a final breakfast, it's time to head home. Hop back in your SUV and drive 1 hour 25 minutes to Reno. Once you’ve returned the car, you’ll take an internal flight to San Francisco for your return flight back to the UK.

Cyril Kelly - Tahoe Ski Scenery
Two very good resorts about 3 hours apart (weather permitting), with a lovely scenic drive between. Very similar accommodation in the centre of the village.
