Northstar is one of Vail Resort's prettiest resorts in Lake Tahoe and one they like to promote as offering a "luxury" ski experience.

It has seen excellent investment in the lift system, mountain restaurants, grooming and snow making facilities. The pretty resort village is focused around the ice skating rink and surrounded by bars, restaurants and outdoor seating area with fire pits, where you can sip you hot-chocolates - with or without "s'mores" or brandy! This is also the focus for most of the lively après ski - from roasting marshmallows around the fire pits to dancing to live music or even watching a movie on their outdoor cinema screens.

Northstar is an excellent resort for a family ski holiday with great learn to ski areas for the children, excellent ski school as well as an attractive and safe resort centre. The wide groomed runs on Mount Pluto with their stunning views over Lake Tahoe offer great intermediate terrain whilst there are some great black diamond glades (some groomed daily) which offer the chance to ski the Tahoe powder or nail some high speed turns. Northstar is also a great option for snowboarders with 5 terrain parks, and it's a breeding ground for some of the best pro-snowboarders in the USA.

Northstar is included on the Tahoe Value Pass and Epic Passes, so even if you are staying at Heavenly (South Lake Tahoe), its definitely worth a couple of days visit as it is easily reached by car or shuttle bus ($15pp approx) in less than an hour, or you can do a day trip by Paddle Steamer across the lake.

I now know why many locals call Northstar Flatstar. Every run is a massive wide groomed run that's not very steep at all. My boyfriend who is new to skiing usually panics at black runs and will not do them. But at Northstar he was able to get down them. If you want to practise then go, but if your a skier that likes a challenge then I wouldn't waste your $80 on a day ticket. If your a boarder there is a massive rail park that would be fun to hang out in.

Winter Has Arrived

27th November 2015 - Craig Charley

November - or should it be Snowvember? - what an incredible month of snow. Pre-season has beaten all expectations and with most resorts now open, the snow continues to fall heavily. If December is anywhere near as good as November, we could be looking at a very deep winter. USA California Last...
