Japan’s largest and least developed island, Hokkaido is renowned for its record snowfalls and beautiful volcanic backdrops. Many of its best secrets lie in the smaller resorts, where the powder can stay untracked for days. With our ski safari, you can tour the resorts by transfer or hire car, venture away from the crowds and discover the very best of Hokkaido.

The first recommended destination is Niseko, internationally famed for snow, tree skiing, and a buzzing village packed with bars and dining options. Stay either slope-side in Niseko Village or in Hirafu Village for the local flair.

Your second stop will either be one of Hokkaido’s quirkiest resorts, Rusutsu, much loved for its phenomenal powder and crazy Japanese kitsch. Alternatively, we highly recommend a visit to nearby Kiroro, which receives Japan’s most consistent snowfall and is relatively under the radar. This is also a great place to hire a guide to find the biggest powder stashes.

Furano is another favourite of ours and makes a fantastic third or fourth resort with its long groomers, superb off-piste and authentic vibe. Having skied extensively throughout Hokkaido, we can also suggest alternative resorts - just ask our team to tell you more.

Culture and cuisine are a big part of any ski trip here, and you’ll find noodle bars and onsens (hot springs) in every resort, as well as local specialities such as snow crab and Hokkaido beef. Before flying home from Tokyo, a night in the capital is a must, whether you want to visit the mega-malls, tour the temples or spend all day eating sushi.

"Hokkaido is home to Japan's best snow and the freshest seafood you'll find. With average yearly snowfalls of more than 14 metres, the best months for powder are December to early March."

Suggested itinerary

Our sample 14-day itinerary is just one suggestion of how you could divide your time. We suggest staying longer in one resort at the start of your trip, to help you settle after your flight.

Days 1 to 2

Fly overnight from London to Tokyo and catch a connecting flight to Sapporo Chitose Airport. The transfer to Niseko takes around three hours by scheduled bus or two hours by private transfer.

Days 3 to 6

Spend four days skiing Japan's most famous resort Niseko. Divide your time between the four interlinked ski areas: Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village, Annupuri and Hanazono. Hire a guide to make the most of your time on the mountain and to find the best tree skiing. Off the slopes, the food is incredible and there's a huge range of hotels to stay at to suit every budget.

Days 7 to 10

It’s a short hop over to Rusutsu or Kiroro. Both destinations are much quieter than Niseko and have some of the deepest, if not the deepest snow in Japan. To get the most out of your time staying slopeside, we recommend pre-booking a guide so you can maximise your time in waist-deep powder and soak in the thermal onsens at night.

Days 11-14

The transfer to Furano takes less than three hours and is a great opportunity to take in one of the more traditional Hokkaido resorts, as Furano itself is a proper town as opposed to a purpose-built resort. You'll have three days skiing in Furano before heading back to Sapporo for the flight home via Tokyo.

Customer Reviews

What our customers say about Hokkaido Explorer Ski Safari.

We visited Japan mid to end of December. The snow came late in 2019 so conditions weren't good and no off-piste skiing was possible. When we did get the powder though we were impressed and would definitely visit again but in January.

If you have not skied in Japan, I can highly recommend it and taking in these three resorts is the perfect combination. Ski Safari made it very easy and trouble free to move between the resorts. Japan gave us the best powder snow as promised. We had limited sunshine during our two weeks, but the daily dumps of powder made up for it. An amazing place and great trip - highly recommended - go for it.

Thanks for organising our trip to Japan. It was a pretty amazing trip and has left us wanting to go back already! Next time we want to hike and board the volcanoes! Maybe have to wait a year or two before we can get back to do that mind!

An excellent holiday, enjoyed by all in our small group even though there were different levels of skiing ability.

Everything worked like clockwork; greeted at Chitose airport and given all our accommodation and travel vouchers. All the bus transport was clean, on time and a joy to use, made the holiday very relaxing.

ANA are an excellent airline to fly with - we were lucky to travel back from Kyoto to Tokyo first class and then club class from Tokyo to Heathrow - not sure why but we didn't complain! The Shiba Park is also very good. They are helpful and the Japanese restaurant is excellent – we used it on the first night. The location is very good. We went out and about on our first full day and managed to get…

This was a special trip for my 40th birthday. Rupert took all our requirements and created an itinerary that fitted perfectly. He arranged everything (where he could) and gave precise information regarding the things he could not (transfer from Narita airport to Tokyo for example). Every single step of the trip went exactly to plan and I was surprised nothing went wrong at all. We even got an upgr…
