North of the Arctic Circle, Riksgränsen ski holidays are completely unique. Here, the lifts open in February and don’t close until June. Home to the annual Big Mountain Championships in May, it’s a magnet for freeriders, with a heli-ski drop zone that's bigger than the Netherlands.

Ski touring is also high on the agenda but piste-skiers haven’t been forgotten - the slopes criss-cross into Norway and stay open until 1 am in June. There’s also a free shuttle to neighbouring Björkliden, giving you more slopes to ski.

With a nod to its past, the small village has an original train station and century-old buildings. There’s also a supermarket, plus a few restaurants and hotel bars - be warned, après drinks are expensive!

To experience more of the Arctic, the ICEHOTEL® makes an incredible add-on. And if you’re planning to visit in March, we highly recommend a Northern Lights excursion.

"Endless off-piste options, unrestricted heli-skiing, northern lights tours and the world famous ICEHOTEL® just a day trip away. As far as winter adventures go this is definitely one for your bucket list."

Accommodation in Riksgränsen

Riksgränsen’s handful of accommodation options range from simple rooms to the historic Meteorologen hotel (1903) - a former customs house and meteorological station, this is the oldest building in town. Most Riksgränsen properties have in-house restaurants and bars, and all are centrally located within 100m of the slopes. We’ve stayed at or visited all of our Riksgränsen accommodation options, so call us for advice and we’ll recommend the best ones for you.

Views at Riksgränsen, Sweden - Magdalena Richardson - April 2023
We had some of the most fun skiing we've had in years. Stepping off the train in Riksgranses was a throwback to another world. Yes, there are port-a-loos on the slopes, yes, the infrastructure is old and basic, yes, the shower in the hotel flooded the whole bathroom every time it was used, it could do perhaps with one more place to eat on the slopes. However, the place is a gem for those who love…

Very good and interesting experience. One ski lift was not working, but we were bussed to the other up lift and it was fine. Although the lift system is limited we had some great skiing with lots of off-piste between the pistes. The weather was very good on the whole.

Chose the resort for its in-bounds off piste ski area, which we found a bit limited. However there is extensive off piste of a more ski touring nature. The only way to really appreciate the area is to go heli-skiing which we did, and was the main reason we chose the resort. We went with Mountain Guide Travel and were lucky enough to have a bluebird day heli-skiing, which was amazing and highly rec…

The resort of Ricksgransen revolves around the Hotel Ricksgransen. The hotel has everything you need for your ski holiday under one roof. The hotel has a 4 star rating which it deserves, the accommodation, food service, and general ambiance reflect the area and the type of ski holiday which you have gone there for. If you want a nice cosy Austrian village type holiday do not go there. The resort i…

Got back from Riksgransen today - had an amazing week, good weather and brilliant snow conditions. The staff at the resort were very friendly and everything was well organised, I was sad to leave the place, it is a very special resort - like nothing I have ever experienced before. So thanks for everything - I'll definitely use Ski Safari again.
