Deep in the Canadian Rockies, the scenery in this part of Alberta is sensational. With skiing for all abilities and unbeatable off-slope activities, it’s perfect for families and mixed groups with non-skiers.

With its pristine setting, Lake Louise is Canada’s largest single ski area. The pistes and back bowls are excellent, and non-skiers can go ice-skating on the frozen lake. From here, the journey to Jasper follows one of the world’s most scenic highways, the Icefields Parkway. Trimmed with glaciers, we usually spend a full day enjoying it but it’s possible to do the drive in three hours. There is a transfer option if you're not a confident driver.

Expect a big welcome when you arrive in Jasper. It’s one of the friendliest resorts we’ve visited, while the slopes are famously uncrowded and the local ice-walks are spectacular. Finally, Banff is a great place to finish up, with two local ski areas and more than 100 bars and restaurants in town. Our favourite non-ski activities here include the guided walks and hot springs.

"I've done this ski safari four times now, it’s absolutely fantastic. The drive from Lake Louise is along one of the world’s most scenic highways - the Icefields Parkway. With so many opportunities for photos and walks, don’t expect to do it in a hurry!"

Suggested itinerary

This 14 day itinerary is our suggestion for the best way to divide your time between Alberta's incredible skiing, winter activities and road trips.

Day 1

Leave the UK and fly to Calgary. Pick up your hire car for the 2.5 hour drive to Lake Louise.

Days 2 to 5

You will ski at Lake Louise for four days. Aside from the ski resort, the frozen lake is a must-visit in winter. You can go ice skating, walking or take a horse-drawn sleigh ride. In the distance, you will see the spectacular Victoria Glacier - you may even see an icefall, a rare but amazing sight. After this, sit back and relax in the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise with a hot chocolate.

Day 6

An early start is best, as today you will drive the Icefields Parkway - linking Lake Louise with Jasper. Rated as one of the top drives in the world by Condé Nast Traveller, the Icefields Parkway is a 232 km stretch of double-lane highway winding along the Continental Divide through soaring rocky mountain peaks, icefields and vast sweeping valleys. There will be lots of stopping for photos!

Days 7 to 9

Ski for four days in Marmot Basin, Jasper's neighbouring resort. Whilst in Jasper, book onto a Maligne Canyon guided walk - the deepest canyon in the Rockies. Frozen waterfalls and surreal ice formations make it a magical place to explore. You could take it up a notch and try ice climbing with a certified mountain guide.

Day 10

You can either ski this day and leave after skiing, or make an early start back across the Icefields parkway to Banff.

Day 11 to 14

Ski 4 days in Sunshine Mountain Resort and Mt Norquay. A trip to Banff would not be complete without a ride up the Banff Gondola. There is a 360-degree observation deck to capture some of the best views in the Rockies, surrounded by six incredible mountain ranges. Visit at night, and it becomes the top spot for sunsets and stargazing, complete with fire pits to keep you warm. And why not stay for lunch or dinner to complete the experience?

Day 15

After a relaxing morning in Banff, drive back to Calgary for your flight home.

Customer Reviews

What our customers say about Alberta Rockies Ski Safari.

Excellent destinations chosen but never recommend hiring a car in the winter moths.

Excellent mixture with Banff for the first week being a very busy town, with Panorama for the second week a little more relaxing.

Another fantastic trip to Canada and Jasper to Banff. The weather conditions made the trip a real challenge but also very enjoyable. An adventure to say the least and plenty of memories made and stories to tell!

Excellent variety of skiing. Jasper and Banff being true ski towns. Lake Louise was delightful and a lovely contrast. Travelling the Icefield Parkway was stunning on a sunny day but channelling on a snowy low disability day. The people were welcoming wherever we went.

All aspects of the trip went well and we really enjoyed the 3 different centres. Great value and all the connections and transportation went to plan perfectly. Had some amazing powder days and because it was generally quiet didn't have much lift queue issues.

Well organised especially as we had a few problems with flight delays and weather and Ski Safari were excellent at sorting problems and making new arrangements.

Overall this was a stunning trip, Banff Springs was the standout hotel. The drive through the Rockies was incredible and we'll certainly return to Banff. Travelling between resorts was fine although in hindsight I wouldn't have down Jasper last as its quite a hike back to Calgary on the last day.

We have recently returned from a wonderful 12 days in Alberta, Canada on the Fairmont Rockies Safari staying in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. Thanks to the excellent organisation by Andy Knights the holiday went very smoothly from picking up the hire car at Calgary airport to dropping it off 12 days later. Our skis and lift passes were ready and waiting for us at our first stop at Banff where we …
