With relatively simple but spectacular drives, your trip begins in Schweitzer Mountain Resort in the USA before crossing the 49th Parallel North to RED Mountain Resort in Canada. Both areas are a must for fans of steep and deep and there's even more skiing to be had along the way.

Schweitzer offers 2,900 acres of incredible terrain, including the countless on and off-piste lines along Schweitzer Bowl & Outback Bowl's 6,000 ft ridge line. The resort boasts an abundance of guaranteed snow and with the nearest city 90 miles away, it never gets busy. The modern and fast lifts whisk you up so you can really rack up the runs.

RED Mountain is one of those hidden gems that can change your perspective on skiing forever. The terrain choices are unbeatable, the "locals' hill" vibe still exists, the resort is proudly independent, the tree skiing is rightly considered the best in the world, and the cat-skiing is simply outstanding. RED will deliver some of the best skiing of your life and you'll wonder why it's not on every UK skier's bucket list.

This ski safari wouldn't be complete without a day trip to Whitewater where the backcountry certainly makes you earn your turns with steep, technical chutes and bowls offering the promise of neck-deep powder. Or for even more skiing, spend a day at the aptly named 49° North Mountain Resort which sits right on the line of latitude which gives this ski safari its name. It's also conveniently on the drive between Schweitzer and RED!

They may be in different countries but both Schweitzer and RED feature on the Ikon Base Pass (5 days in each). If you want to add a day in Whitewater or 49° North, you'll need to purchase a day pass.

"If you want the best tree skiing in North America, technically challenging terrain, blissfully empty slopes, deep snow, off-piste, backcountry, cat skiing and the adventure of skiing in two countries on one trip, then the 49th Parallel North is the ski safari for you."

Suggested itinerary

All of our holidays are tailor-made to suit your dates and requirements, however below is a sample itinerary to show how the resorts might best be combined.

Day 1

Land in Spokane in the USA, collect your SUV and head two hours north-east to north to Schweitzer. Should your flight land late at night we advise spending your first night in Spokane and driving early in the morning with fresh eyes.

Days 2 to 6

Schweitzer's resort base is small and compact, with accommodation, restaurants and bars all within a short ski. It's not a super lively resort but the real buzz comes from the endless powder and awesome terrain. On a powder day, take the Basin Express, then Lakeview Triple and ski along the South Ridge down to the powder-laden terrain of C Chute, K-Macs and South Bowl Chutes. Mindblowing!

Day 7

After a tasty breakfast, check out early to hit the road so you can spend a full day at 49° North Mountain Resort. A fairly unknown destination with excellent service and a strong variety of pistes to explore. It's a bit more mellow than the other resorts so you can use it as a bit of a 'rest' day before you carry on to RED Mountain Resort.

Day 8 to 12

We recommend meeting up with a free mountain snow host on day one to familiarise yourself with RED's vast terrain. Alternatively, head up the Motherload chair, along Buffalo Ridge and drop into Sara’s Chutes for some steep and challenging turns. When the legs are tired, head up Paradise Chair for lunch at Paradise Lodge and then enjoy the multiple green, blue and single black runs back down.

Add an Overnight Experience in RED

Add a unique overnight stay at the Constella Cabins, which gives you first access to Paradise’s famous gladed tree skiing and beautifully groomed runs the next morning. Out under the stars, you'll truly get that remote backcountry feeling with incredible food and once-in-a-lifetime skiing.

Include a day at Whitewater

Our other top tip is driving from RED and spending the day skiing in Whitewater. It's a serious mountain for serious skiers and is well known for its steeps. We recommend hiring an ‘In Deep’ guide, where for $40 you can have an experienced high-level instructor to show you where to find the best snow, terrain for your level and how to access some of the more challenging terrain options.

Day 13

Soak up the views as you drive alongside the Columbia River on the way back to Spokane for your flight home. The journey to the airport takes around 2.5 hours.

Customer Reviews

What our customers say about 49th Parallel North Ski Safari.

You may not have heard of Red Mountain Resort, but it is a real “GEM” in Canada’s “Powder Highway” The resort is currently made up of three peaks, Red, Granite and Grey, and you can pretty much ride / ski where ever you want to go within the ski boundary, just pick your line and go……….. There are some mellow runs, but the terrain is probably better suited to the intermediate and advanced and wil…
