Expert Opinion Our Expert

"This is an awesome trip combining some of the largest ski areas in North America with amazing scenery and lively city stops. It is a particularly fantastic option later in the season when the cities are pleasantly warm and the snow is still great."

Sample 14-night itinerary

Day 1:

The next morning you’ll be up early, so take a Bay cruise under the Golden Gate Bridge and to Alcatraz Island. Other ‘must-sees’ are the infamous cable cars, Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 and any of the city’s many art museums. San Francisco has an incredible variety of cuisine on offer so make sure you get out for dinner and experience one of the wonderful restaurants in the city.

Day 2:

If you haven’t already picked up your hire car you can do so now and head over at your leisure to your accommodation around Lake Tahoe – Heavenly or Squaw Valley are both great value options. The drive will take about 3-4 hours but do take your time around the lake – it’s just beautiful. Check in to your accommodation, pick up your ski equipment and take some time to explore the resort.

Day 3-6:

Time to get out on the mountain! There are 7 ski areas to explore around the lake and each offers a variety of terrain and has a really different vibe - you could easily stay for a season! For example, skiing at Heavenly is a unique experience with the unmissable views of the Nevada desert on one side and the stunning crystal blue lake on the other.

Day 7:

Check out, pack the car up and head out for a morning’s skiing at one of the South Lake Tahoe Resorts (Heavenly, Kirkwood or Sierra at Tahoe) and after skiing until 2 pm, start the 3-4 hour drive south to Mammoth. This is an easy and impressive drive following the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Mono and Topaz lakes in particular look spectacular at sunset.

Day 8-11:

Mammoth is a gem of a resort, with a huge variety of skiing including big open bowls and steep glades. The Terrain Parks are also some of the best in the world, with beginner, intermediate and expert areas so that you can build your confidence in stages. It also has excellent après so don’t rush home too quickly after the last run.

Day 11-13:

After a good night’s sleep you begin what is a truly extraordinary experience – the drive to Las Vegas through Death Valley. It’s very strange being at 10,000ft on Mammoth Mountain in the morning and then 200ft below sea level in the desert a few hours later. You have to stop for the sunset and watch the shifting light and shadows across the desert. Finish off this amazing trip with 2 nights in the party capital of the world. Whether you gamble or not, everyone has to experience the extravagance and exuberance of Las Vegas at night. The next day you can take a drive to the Hoover Dam, take a (very reasonably priced) helicopter trip out to the Grand Canyon, do a bit of Factory Store Outlet Shopping or just lounge by the pool, sipping cocktails and people watching!!

Day 14:

Fly back to London from Las Vegas.
