Powder Ski Safari
The resorts of Kicking Horse and Revelstoke are awesome and receive some of the best Champagne Powder in the world!
The terrain is vast - the two resorts are like huge natural terrain parks with wide open bowls, natural chutes and glades. They offer a true big mountain skiing experience which means you get backcountry skiing conditions yet you're within the boundaries of a resort. The attitude at both resorts is that as long as it is not closed then you can ski it, ride it, drop it, jump it… this makes the skiing a mind blowing experience!
The resorts both benefit from a big annual snow fall and a seriously big vertical drop: Kicking Horse gets on average 7+ meters of snow and has a vertical drop of 1260 meters. Revelstoke gets on average between 12 and 18 meters and has a vertical drop of 1713 meters (the largest in North America).
After the flight to Calgary you will need to pick up your rental vehicle, as transfers are not available, and drive the 3 hours to Kicking Horse. To get the most from this Safari I would recommend spending 5 or 7 days at Kicking Horse and 3 to 5 days in Revelstoke.
Kicking Horse has some of the world’s most incredibly steep vertical descents, deep Champagne Powder and a truly spectacular and unique terrain mix. There are well over 100 marked runs spread over 2750 acres. 80% of the mountain is considered intermediate, advanced and expert terrain and there are 70 inbound chutes to throw yourself down.
The resort also has a ‘Big Mountain Centre’ to help you progress your skills and tackle the diverse and challenging terrain. Overall the big mountain experience here is world class. With ridiculously long downhill runs and the option to heli-ski, Kicking Horse is a place where the stories are almost too tall to believe.
The town of Golden, a 15 minute drive from Kicking Horse has a good selection of restaurants and bars. Formerly a mining town it retains that spirit but now considers itself a ‘mountain’ town. Definitely a good experience for a night out or two and to stock up on supplies. I recommend staying on the mountain itself in one of the many wonderful condos or B&B’s. There is a good selection of restaurants, bars and gift shops and this way you are on the lifts in no time, and often first in line for the gondola and the powder that beckons.
happen.
Revelstoke Mountain Resort features 3,031 acres of lift-accessed terrain with a descent of 1,713 vertical meters (5,620 feet) - the highest in North America and believe me you feel it by the end!
The resort is still in its infancy having opened in 2007 and there are only 52 marked runs, however, those that are marked are seriously long. The longest, The Last Spike, is 15.2 km! The tree runs with names such as Glades of Glory and Snorkel Glades offer some of the best tree skiing the world over. The steeps here are incredible and are marked for experts only. Some can be reached by chairs, others involve a small hike, but often those are the best. Check out Powder Assault, one of the very best there is. Revelstoke has to be one of the only resorts in the world where you can lift ski, cat ski and heli-ski from the same base area.
The Resort has two high-speed quad chairs, an eight-passenger gondola and a dedicated beginner slope with Magic Carpet conveyor lift. New amenities at the base of the mountain include the Rockford Wok|Bar|Grill full service restaurant, retail and rental shops, and lift ticket and skier services. The lift-accessed Mid-Mountain Lodge featuring stunning views, a self-serve restaurant, espresso bar, and deck with a barbeque is also located on the mountain.
The town of Revelstoke is where most of the accommodation is located. Here you have a great selection of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops.
Sample 10 night itinerary:
All of our holidays are tailor-made to suit your dates and requirements, however below is a sample itinerary to show how the resorts might best be combined:
Day 1:
Land in Calgary – pick up hire car and drive to Kicking Horse.
Days 2 - 5:
Ski Kicking Horse
Day 6:
After skiing in Kicking Horse – jump in the car and head over the Roger’s Pass to Revelstoke. There is a time change and in this direction the hour’s difference works in your favour.
Days 7 to 9:
Ski Revelstoke
Day 10:
After skiing in Revelstoke – back in the car and head back over the Roger’s Pass - the last night will be spent in Banff. The reason for this is the Roger's Pass is notorious for road closure due to avalanche control which isn't good if you are trying to get to the airport. This way you've got a security buffer and means that you can have more of a relaxed final day before driving to the airport. Banff is a great town to experience for it's lively and vibrant nightlife.
Day 11:
Drive to Calgary – drop hire car - fly home.
Price Guide:
A sample price for this 14 night Ski Safari including accommodation, direct flights and hire of an SUV starts from £1,249 pp for 2 adults, £1,039 pp for 4 adults, subject to availability at the time of booking.
