Starting and finishing in the fascinating coastal city of Bergen, you'll travel by train past pristine fjords, frozen lakes and majestic mountains, stopping off at two of Norway's best resorts - Geilo and Voss.

Riding the Bergen railway is an adventure in itself, passing through breathtaking landscapes with more space to stretch out and move around than a usual ski transfer. Paired with Norway’s quieter, welcoming resorts, this ski holiday is ideal for anyone who prefers crowd-free terrain, pristine pistes, and amazing winter activities in a peaceful, awe-inspiring setting.

Surrounded by hills and fjords, Bergen is a beautiful place to begin and end your adventure. We recommend at least one night here to enjoy the UNESCO architecture and fabulous food.

Peaceful Geilo (~4 hours from Bergen) is your first stop and provides a brilliant warm-up for any rusty ski legs. The two adjacent ski areas excel in wide, immaculately groomed runs. And non-skiers are spoiled with a full range of winter activities and a tantalising choice of restaurants.

It's then 2 hours to Voss, which you'll have passed on the way to Geilo. The slopes here provide more of a challenge, but there's still terrain for all abilities. The gondola and hotel both sit on the train platform - you can't get more convenient than that!

This is a very customisable itinerary - it's easy to switch the stay in Voss for Myrkdalen (a great ski-in ski-out alternative). Whichever resort you choose, it’s possible to ski both with an away day. The resorts are linked by ski bus, and we can provide a lift pass that covers both areas for no additional charge (must be requested at time of booking). Plus, the fjords are right on your doorstep and easily accessible from either resort. Day trips to Flåm, including an electric fjord cruise and ride on the world-famous Flåm Railway, are possible from either resort. Or to enhance your itinerary further, you can opt for an overnight stay in the village of Flåm - the gateway to the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord.

You could even choose to travel the full length of the Bergen Railway, starting your trip in Oslo. We can adjust your itinerary for outbound flights to Oslo from London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

Suggested itinerary

This sample itinerary is our suggestion of how you could divide your time between Norway’s rail-linked ski areas, natural landscapes and cities.

Day 1 - Fly to Norway

Fly direct into Bergen from London, Manchester, Edinburgh or Aberdeen. Take the Express Bus or the Light Rail from the airport to Bergen Station, where you'll start your Bergen Railway adventure. Journey along the highest mainline railway in northern Europe, climbing above the treeline, passing tumbling waterfalls and dramatic fjords. The train goes directly to Geilo - your first stop!

Days 2-3 - Warm up in Geilo

Geilo’s gentler slopes provide the perfect warm-up before heading to Voss, which offers more of a challenge. Located on the Ustedalsfjorden Lake and national parkland, Geilo is a fantastic location for non-ski activities such as dog sledding and ice fishing.

Day 4 - Back on the train

The journey between Geilo and Voss takes around 2 hours, so you can choose to either ski the morning in Geilo before travelling to Voss or catch an early train for an afternoon skiing Voss. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and take this as a rest day.

Optional day trip to Myrkdalen

Approximately 30 km (19 miles) north of Voss is Myrkdalen, another excellent resort renowned for its powder and off-piste terrain, and slopes that cater for all levels. When combined with Voss, it effectively doubles your skiable area. Visiting Myrkdalen is optional, but we can provide a lift pass that covers access to both resorts for no additional charge, plus there is a daily ski bus connecting the resorts. It makes a perfect pairing with Voss during your time here.

Optional day trip to Flåm

If you’re feeling more adventurous, we highly recommend taking a day to visit Flåm. You'll take another world-famous railway (even more scenic than the Bergen Railway!) and cruise through the fjords on an electric boat. You can even add a night or two here before continuing your journey!

Day 7 - On to Bergen

The best way to travel back to Bergen is to board the train one last time. Kick back and relax as you climb up the most scenic section of this historic railway line, passing snow drifts, rocky creeks, mountain ranges, and glacial tundra. Spend your last night in this historic city. Not done skiing? You chould choose to ski right through to last lift and catch an evening train to Bergen.

Day 8 - Travel home

Take a short shuttle or tram to the airport to fly home. You have an evening flight, so plenty of time to explore the city. The city views from Mount Fløyen are stunning, and the wood-clad boathouses of Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf make this a beautiful place to wander.

Travel by train Oslo to Voss and then bus to Myrkdalen. Voss ski pass good for both resorts. Both small but good variety of runs and well looked after.

Very enjoyable holiday, epic train trips between resorts, no issues at any point with travel. Resorts were a bit disappointing with lack of runs open so skiing was limited (early Jan 26). The scenic Fjord trip and Flam railway were definite highlights. Bergen Bors hotel a great last night stay.
