Fjords and Mountains Ski Safari
Experience Norway’s gentle terrain, dramatic fjords and iconic cities on this timeless railway adventure.
The Oslo to Bergen railway journey is an adventure in itself - with the line stopping in some of Norway’s best resorts, it’s perfect for a ski safari. With unintimidating slopes and stress-free train travel, this holiday is ideal for families, beginners and anyone who prefers gentle terrain.
Journeying through Norway on the highest mainline railway in northern Europe, you’ll travel above the treeline, passing tumbling waterfalls and dramatic fjords. From Oslo, the train takes you directly to Geilo’s beginner-friendly pistes, where there are non-ski activities include dog sledding and ice fishing.
If you’re travelling as a family, we’d recommend spending most of your time in Geilo or Myrkdalen. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you could continue along the railway to Voss, or take a day out to experience Norway’s deepest Fjord and steepest standard-gauge railway.
Surrounded by hills and fjords, Bergen is a beautiful place to end your adventure. We recommend at least one night here to enjoy the UNESCO architecture and fabulous food.
This sample itinerary is our suggestion of how you could divide your time between Norway’s rail-linked ski areas, natural landscapes and cities.
All our ski safaris are completely customisable, and you can change the itinerary to suit your preferences, whether that means more skiing, more sightseeing, or more time in Oslo and Bergen.
Oslo & Geilo
Oslo - Touchdown in Norway’s capital and spend a night in the city. Compact enough to explore on foot, Oslo has a vibrant café and bar culture, while its excellent museums showcase Norway’s Viking heritage.
Geilo - The following day, take the Bergen Railway from Oslo to Geilo. Spend five or six days in this national park village, where the gentle terrain is particularly well-suited to families and nervous skiers.
Flåm Railway - A branch line of the Bergen Railway, this is Europe’s steepest standard-gauge railway. With views over Norway’s deepest fjord, it makes an excellent daytrip from Voss or Geilo.
Bergen - Take the train from Geilo to Bergen and spend your last night in this historic city. The city views from Mount Fløyen are stunning, and the wood-clad boathouses of Bryggen Hanseatic wharf make this a beautiful place to wander. On your final morning, take the shuttle bus to Oslo airport.
