Shiga Kogen Ski Holidays

Shiga Kogen is absolutely perfect for intermediates and low-end advanced riders. With 18 different areas covering 607 hectares, it seems colossal by Japanese standards and you’d need at least three to four days to explore it.

Shiga Kogen is Japan’s largest ski resort with a collection of 18 interconnected resorts, all skiable on one lift pass.

Located in the Nagano prefecture, Shiga Kogen offers an endless variety of long groomers. Yakebitaiyama and Okushigakogen are amongst the largest ski areas within Shiga Kogen, and where we recommend you stay as a base to best explore the resort. Okushigakogen, in particular, has become increasingly popular due to its progressive attitude towards opening up freeride terrain to skiers and snowboarders carrying avalanche safety equipment.

While there is no main resort base, each of the 18 areas has large resort style hotels at their base and are truly ski-in ski-out. Dining and nightlife are fairly quiet as it is limited to what’s on offer at your hotel.

We highly recommend making a visit to the nearby Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park and the pretty town of Shibu Onsen. The resort is also home to the famous brewery, Shigakogen Beer, which now hosts a beer festival each March called the Snow Monkey Beer Live (be sure to book early as this is very popular).

Shiga Kogen can easily be combined with one of the other Nagano/Niigata resorts on a Nagano Ski Safari.

Every holiday is tailor-made, just for you.
