Just beyond Oslo, there are a number of ski resorts that offer a variety of terrain suitable for all ability levels. With an average two-and-a-half-hour transfer time between these resorts and Oslo, plus a short internal flight to Tromsø, we’ll make sure your ski safari journey is smooth on and off the slopes, from start to finish.

The nearest to Oslo is Norefjell, at only two hours away. This former Olympic host holds the title of Norway’s biggest vertical drop and has some challenging black runs! Yet, this humble resort has wonderfully diverse, fun terrain for every level of skier. We're talking beautifully wide pistes, with space to coast and enjoy the lake views, to ample powder areas that track beside groomed runs or weave off into the pines. Slopes here are quiet too, even during supposedly busy periods, making it a great destination for new skiers 'in training'. The 4* Norefjell Ski & Spa Hotel is the perfect base where you can enjoy soothing treatments or hot tub soaks – the best way to end a long day on the slopes.

Located between fjords, mountain peaks and islands above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø offers one of the highest probabilities of experiencing the northern lights in the world. While its extreme northerly location may conjure up images of truly Arctic conditions, Tromsø enjoys a much milder climate than you may expect compared to its neighbours at the same latitude.

The Gulf Stream keeps the city’s temperature at a balmy average of around -5.0°C, even in the depths of winter. This means you can enjoy a wonderful range of outdoor winter activities without requiring truly specialist outdoor gear. You’ll also be able to experience the vibrant nightlife and enjoy local food, with fresh seafood being one of the many highlights.

Whilst we recommend Norefjell for its variety of terrain, great accommodation, and peaceful atmosphere, you could very easily swap or add a second resort to your trip. Resorts in Beitostølen, Gausta, Geilo, Hafjell, Hemsedal, Kvitfjell and Trysil all work well.

"This is an unforgettable trip allowing you to explore a range of world-class experiences both on and off the slopes. The highlight for many being the chance to get a glimpse of the mystical Aurora Borealis."

Suggested itinerary

This sample itinerary is our suggestion for dividing your time between Norefjell and Tromsø. All our ski safaris are completely customisable, whether that means more skiing, more sightseeing, or pairing the city of Tromsø with a different resort or even multiple resorts.

Days 1 to 5

Land in Oslo Gardermoen and meet your transfer for the two-hour journey to Norefjell. Spend five days in Norefjell exploring the diverse ski area and relaxing in the spa.

Day 6

Take the two-hour transfer back to Oslo Gardermoen for a short flight to Tromsø in the Arctic Circle. Then hop on board the very efficient public bus to the city centre - it only takes 15 minutes.

Days 6 to 7

Spend two days in the colourful hub of Tromsø. For the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights, take a boat cruise on the Aurora Explorer, a ride on the Aurora Safari Minibus or try the Tromsø Cable Car for uninterrupted views of the cityscape.

Day 8

On your final morning, take the shuttle bus to Tromsø airport for your flight home.

Customer Reviews

What our customers say about Ski & Northern Lights Ski Safari.

We flew to Tromso after Gausta and spent 3 nights there. Saw the northern lights which were amazing.

The overall trip was great, Good skiing for 4 days and then sight seeing in Tromso, with an evening cruise to experience the Northern lights. Really enjoyable experience. Only comment would be that Tromso shuts down for Easter, so a lot of shops and Restaurants were closed, but didn't't impact our enjoyment.

Dog sledding on the Ski & Aurora Explorer Ski Safari - Barbara Dale - April 2023
Tromso was excellent resort. We could have done with 5 nights not 3 . Took an evening boat trip and saw aurora. The husky dog sled trip fantastic. Fortunate with 2 days clear skies before heavy snow which restricted further sight seeing. Local restaurants good and prices not as bad as expected.

Aurora Borealis, Tromso, Norway - Amy Seager - January 2023
Tromso was a wonderful city to visit. With hardly any light hours, it was a completely different way of life and we enjoyed hearing all about the Sami culture.

Tromsø was fantastic - the Edge hotel was superior than any expectation. The food in the hotel was also exceptional! There are lots of things to do in the area, however Sunday is very quiet - so plan ahead something to do on those days.

Excellent. Hotel good and the trips that we did in Tromso were great and we did see the Northern Lights. Have never been to Norway so it was an experience. We did a lot when we were there. It was expensive for drinks and trips so not sure we would return but would recommend advising of the cost.
