For the uninitiated, ski-in ski-out describes accommodation located directly on the slopes or by lifts, where you can literally ski to or from the front door. It’s the perfect option for those looking to catch the first lift and ski fresh lines, or avoid shuttle buses and long walks at the start and end of the day.
For families, especially those with younger kids, ski-in ski-out is a brilliant solution - you’ll be grateful for it at the end of every ski day, and every time someone forgets something in their room!
Having skied in over 100 resorts, I feel privileged to have experienced some of the very best ski-in ski-out resorts and hotels the world has to offer. Below are eight that stand out to me, but first…
Is ski-in ski-out expensive?
It’s a question we hear a lot, often from those with experience of the Alps, where ski-in ski-out comes at a premium. But it doesn’t have to be the case.
In our resorts, ski-in ski-out accommodation doesn’t necessarily mean a huge price tag. In fact, ski-in ski-out is often the norm, so there is no shortage of options when choosing where to stay. We work with a number of different properties in each resort, so you can pick the accommodation that suits your budget and requirements.
To give you a clearer picture, below I’ve highlighted our favourite hotels, cabins and apartments to stay at in our chosen resorts, with options from 3* upwards. As with many elements of a ski holiday, the earlier you book, the better value you can find, so be sure to give our team a call on 01273 224060 or fill out an enquiry form and we can start building your ideal ski-in ski-out holiday.

Norway’s best ski-in ski-out resorts
Gausta
Gausta is a firm favourite with the parents in our team here at Ski Safari, with a long, snow-sure season, an excellent ski school, and quiet slopes even during peak season. Everything is easily accessible from the heart of the resort too, with ski hire, ski school, grocery stores and restaurants right on your doorstep.

For ski-in ski-out accommodation, you can’t beat the self-catered 3* Gaustablikk Cabins, which are perfect for families. The cabins are situated right beside the beginners’ slope and children’s area, just a short walk from the ski school and equipment rental. And if that wasn’t enough, each cabin is a detached unit with its own fireplace and private sauna.
If a hotel is more appealing, the 4* Gaustablikk Fjellresort is a stone’s throw from the lifts and slopes, and is a popular stay with the Ski Safari team; you won’t forget your first visit to the floating saunas, or your first dip in the icy frozen lake…
Check out Ski Safari's Gausta resort guide to see just how close the accommodation is to the slopes.
Kvitfjell
Pronounced quit-fee-yell, Kvitfjell is as snow sure as they come. The first flurries often arrive well before the resort opens in mid-December and don’t leave until late April, providing skiers with a huge window to experience the world-class slopes. A quick look at the resort map shows how close the resort’s accommodation lies to its many slopes and runs, and it’s no surprise every accommodation option we offer is ski-in ski-out.

Out of our three options, I’d recommend the 4* Gudbrandsgard Hotel, a mid-mountain hotel occupying a prime location right on the slopes with breathtaking views of the Rondane National Park. There’s an on-site rental shop and the ski school is just outside.
For self-caterers, the 4* Yttersvingen Apartments are perfect, with the added bonus of having the Vestiden Express chairlift on your doorstep, offering instant access to the slopes and the top of Kvitfjell.

Canada’s best ski-in ski-out resorts
Whistler
Whistler’s not just a resort - it’s three distinct, car-free, ski-in ski-out villages which all sit at the base of North America’s biggest ski area. Convenient accommodation is everywhere, and it’s easy to find plenty of ski-in ski-out options at the base of slopes.
If you’re looking for the true ski-in ski-out experience, you have plenty of choice. For 3* to 4* stays, I’d recommend the 3* Blackcomb Springs Suites, 4* Legends, 4* First Tracks Lodge and 4*+ Pan Pacific Mountainside.

At the higher end of the scale, the 5* Fairmont Chateau Whistler ticks every box. From its prime location at the base of Blackcomb Mountain to the superb onsite restaurants and the vast health club and spa, it’s a huge favourite with customers and staff alike. And be sure to pick up oven-fresh doughnuts in the Portobello café, they’re some of the best Canada has to offer!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed with the options, give us a call and we’ll talk through your requirements and make a personal recommendation - we’ve stayed in all our accommodation in Whistler, and we re-visit regularly to check on quality and scout new options.

Sun Peaks
Sun Peaks is Canada’s second-largest ski area and a brilliant place to visit, with skiing for every ability level spread across three mountains. The Tyrolean-style village isn’t just ski-in ski-out, it can also be classed as ski-through, with skiing allowed all the way through the high street to your chosen café, restaurant or bar. When morning comes, it’s a short ski down the high street again to the main chairlifts of Sunburst and Sundance.

This means you have plenty of ski-in ski-out accommodation to choose from, but the 4* Sun Peaks Grand Hotel and Residences are our pick of the bunch. With rentals and ski lockers at the base of the hotel, you really have everything you need just steps away from the slopes! Nestled in the heart of the resort, you’ll be as central as can be, and early booking can secure you a top-quality room at great value.

Japan’s best ski-in ski-out resorts
Niseko
Niseko is Japan’s largest single ski area and best-known ski resort, renowned for the quality and quantity of snow it gets throughout the season. If you want to experience the legendary ‘japow’, Niseko should be high on your list. The ski area comprises four interlinked resorts, and out of the four, we’d recommend Niseko Hirafu with its large collection of hotels and restaurants.

While most stays in Hirafu are situated within a short distance of lifts and slopes, it’s the upscale 5* Skye Niseko you want to head to for the very best ski-in ski-out experience. Sandwiched between two slopes and a short ski away from the gondolas and lifts, it’s perfectly located for access to multiple slopes, as well as the Hirafu Gondola or Ace Gondola.
Discover Niseko in our comprehensive resort guide.
Naeba
If you’re looking for a resort with slope-side convenience and a short transfer, Naeba’s a new destination for us in 2026/27, and one we’re very excited about. It's the closest resort on our programme to Tokyo, meaning you can be skiing the day you land.
It’s where the Japanese go to ski, and for good reason, with terrain for all abilities and deep powder. The handy link to the connected Kagura Ski Resort offers even more acreage to explore. I was lucky enough to visit in March 2026 and it’s a place I won’t forget in a hurry (and as you can see from the video above, it really is a short trip from your room to the slopes!).
All guests skiing in Naeba will stay in the 4* Naeba Prince Hotel. Situated at the base of the slopes, it’s as ski-in ski-out as it gets, and chances are you’ll also have a fantastic view of the slopes from your room, as I did during my visit. A one-stop shop that has everything you’ll need during your stay, you’ll find traditional onsen, a spa, gym, ski rental, non-ski activities, karaoke, and an incredible choice (34 and counting!) of restaurants and bars - all on site!
See just how close the 4* Naeba Prince Hotel is to the slopes in our resort guide.
USA’s best ski-in ski-out resort
Aspen Snowmass
Aspen Snowmass is one of North America’s most iconic ski resorts, delivering four huge ski areas and one of the best après scenes in the country. Away from the bustle of the main town lies the more affordable Snowmass Village - a purpose-built ski-in ski-out village offering convenience and a slightly more relaxed pace of life on the mountain.

There’s plenty of ski-in ski-out accommodation on offer, but our favourite is the modern 5* Limelight Hotel Snowmass. The hotel is right next to the Elk Camp Gondola for instant, easy access to Snowmass’ 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, offering something for every level of experience.
Away from the skiing, for adults there’s a lively bar and great restaurants, while the interconnecting rooms and proximity to the ski school make it a great pick for families too. There’s even a five-story climbing wall!
Discover the many options available in our Aspen Snowmass resort guide.
Sweden’s best ski-in ski-out resort
Åre
Pronounced aura, Åre is Scandinavia’s largest ski resort, with more than 1,000 acres of terrain to explore. Perhaps surprisingly, you’ll also find the slopes quiet and uncrowded, even in peak season. Don’t let the lack of crowds fool you, though; Åre is a truly world-class ski resort.

Åre village centre is located at the foot of the valley, but plenty of accommodation options are situated slope-side. We’d recommend the 4* Hotel Fjällgården for the very best location on the mountain, offering stunning views over the village, and instant access to slopes and lifts on its doorstep. There’s also lively afterski entertainment, including live bands bringing the energy from 3 to 6pm.
The 5* Copperhill Mountain Lodge is another fantastic option. The luxurious lodge is particularly popular with Ski Safari customers and it's easy to see why, with a stunning slope-side location surrounded by snow-capped trees and top-quality facilities inside.
