Freeride the Fjords Ski Safari
Combine the breathtaking scenery of the Norwegian fjords with the epic backcountry skiing in the region.
Norway is well known for gentle terrain which provides the perfect setting for beginners and intermediates, but this ski safari has its focus purely on exploring the lesser-skied and more challenging terrain that lies along the spine of the country.
Known for its fjords firstly, this area is also a spectacular playground for experienced skiers. The locals from this region have earned so many winter Olympic medals that if they were a country, they would have more medals per capita than anywhere else on the planet.
We’ve put together our suggestion of how to combine some of Norway’s best skiing and scenery.
All our ski safaris are completely customisable, so we can tailor the itinerary to suit your preferences - whether that means more skiing, more sightseeing, or different resorts and attractions.

Fly into Bergen and meet your driver at the airport. Typically, you'll be in Myrkdalen by late afternoon. The drive to Myrkdalen will give you an idea of the epic scale of the fjords, with the road following that of the Oslo Bergen railway until it starts to climb up to the resort. It takes around two hours to get to the resort from the airport, journeying alongside fjords, mountains and waterfalls.
Spend five days in Myrkdalen on half board basis at the 4* Myrkdalen Hotel which features spacious, modern rooms and excellent food. Each morning you'll ski less than 50 metres from the hotel to the chairlift to enjoy one of Europe’s most snowsure resorts, where five metres of snow falls every winter
While the resort is a haven for beginners, there is some really exciting off-piste to be had - as discovered by Fall-Line magazine back in 2017. Due to the highly accessible nature of the terrain, it’s a great way to warm up for the ski touring to come later on. Some of the off-piste terrain hits 45 degrees and retains excellent powder conditions even late into the season - the lifts in Myrkdalen are open right up to 01 May.
Following your warm-up days in Myrkdalen, the real adventure begins with a short journey (45 minutes) to Gudvangen, a small Viking village surrounded by mountains with amazing views down the valley and across the water.
Here you join one of the most dramatic fjord trips in the world, journeying by boat across the Nærøyfjord to Flåm (two hours) where you pick up the famous Flåm railway which ascends to your remote hotel, Vatnahalsen Mountain Lodge (50 minutes).
The Vatnahalsen Mountain Lodge acts as your hub for two days of guided ski touring across the surrounding mountains. All guides are professionally qualified and hold International Federation of Mountain Guides (UIAGM) certification.
You´ll experience unique skiing in jaw-dropping surroundings with your guide adapting the skiing to the group's skill level. A hearty daily breakfast, packed lunch for you to take with you during the day and a home-cooked evening meal served back at the lodge are all provided.
Oslo or Bergen
Before you fly home, immerse yourself in Norwegian culture with a night or two in Norway's capital, Oslo, staying in the luxurious 5* spa hotel, The Thief, or one of your choosing. Alternatively, you can stay in the historic city of Bergen enjoying the harbour and Norwegian cuisine.
