Norway is well known for its gentle terrain, which provides the perfect setting for beginners and intermediates. But this ski safari has its focus purely on exploring the lesser-skied and more challenging terrain that lies along the spine of the country.

Best known for its fjords, this part of Norway is also a spectacular playground for experienced skiers. The locals have earned so many winter Olympic medals that if they were a country, they would have more medals per capita than anywhere else on the planet.

There is some really exciting off-piste to be found, as discovered by Fall-Line magazine back in 2017. Due to the highly accessible nature of the terrain, it’s a great way to warm up for the ski touring to come later on. Some of the off-piste terrain hits 45 degrees and retains excellent powder conditions even late into the season - the lifts in Myrkdalen are open right up to 01 May.

"A stunning combination of scenery and terrain allowing experienced skiers to explore Norway with professional mountain guides."

Suggested itinerary

We’ve put together our suggestion of how to combine some of Norway’s best skiing and scenery.

Day 1

Fly into Bergen and meet your driver at the airport. Typically, you'll be in Myrkdalen by late afternoon. It takes around two hours to get to the resort from the airport, journeying alongside fjords, mountains and waterfalls.

Days 2 to 4

Spend three days skiing in Myrkdalen, staying on a half-board basis at the 4* Myrkdalen Hotel, which features spacious, modern rooms and excellent food.

Day 5

The real adventure begins with a short journey (45 minutes) to Gudvangen. Here you join one of the most dramatic fjord trips in the world, journeying by boat across the Nærøyfjord to Flåm (two hours) where you pick up the famous Flåm railway which ascends to your remote hotel, Vatnahalsen Mountain Lodge (50 minutes).

Days 6 to 7

The Vatnahalsen Mountain Lodge acts as your hub for two days of guided ski touring. All guides are professionally qualified and hold International Federation of Mountain Guides (UIAGM) certification. A hearty daily breakfast, a packed lunch for you to take with you during the day and a home-cooked evening meal served back at the lodge are all provided.

Day 8

Choose whether you’d like to travel home via either Oslo or Bergen. It is also possible to enhance your stay with an overnight in either city. Immerse yourself in Norwegian culture with a night or two in Norway's capital, Oslo. Alternatively, you can stay in the historic city of Bergen, enjoying the harbour and Norwegian cuisine.

Customer Reviews

What our customers say about Freeride the Fjords Ski Safari.

Impressive cruise from Gudvangan to Flam and railway journey from Flam to Vatnahalsen. Recommended. The ski touring at Vatnahalsen was very scenic but challenging snow conditions with some steep slopes through the trees. The hotel was fantastic, very friendly with excellent food.
