The resort was ideal. The people were really friendly and helpful. The Geiolia ski centre has lovely, well maintained uncrowded runs. No queues for the lifts. Lots of blues and greens so very good for ski lessons. Ski instructors were kind and lots of fun with excellent English. Picking up the hire skis / boots was really well managed; with the prior information requested everything was ready for us.

Geilo is not a particularly beautiful resort but there are lots of well maintained runs and we loved that we never had a queue to get on a lift. The resort was quiet and the runs are wide so it often felt as if we had the place to ourselves. Our son enjoyed ski school which took a slightly unconventional approach but was great fun. Make sure you allow plenty of time to collect equipment and lift passes as there are not that many staff and the pace is quite 'relaxed' so don't expect a rapid turn around however, quality of the equipment and levels of service were super. It was easy to procure provisions and there are also a good selection of restaurants. Don't believe the horror stories about the costs associated with self-catering in Norway - it is perfectly possible to feed a family very reasonably.

Having only been to the Alps and Pyrenees many years ago, I cant properly compare Geilo. However what I would say it was ideal for what I wanted. The Vestlia hotel was great. Excellent 3 course dinners for the adults and the buffet for kids in general with good variety. I would have preferred to see more green vegetables though! The pool / spa facilities are first class. The ski instructors for my son (nearly 7 years old) were great. I heard grumbles from some parents about the 'ski play' lack of organisation but this didn't affect me as my son was immediately keen to hit the slopes. For experienced skiers looking for a challenge this isn't a good resort but for beginners and possibly intermediates its fab.

Small resort but very good for beginners. No lift queues which was great, even though it was obviously a school holiday in Norway. Great for kids.
