Canada may seem a long way to go for a family ski holiday, but once you're there, the diversity of terrain, friendliness of the locals and ease of getting around make it more than worth the journey.

Whistler is undoubtedly the most popular option for families, with a huge range of accommodation, endless terrain, an easy transfer, fantastic ski school and every activity imaginable but it's also worth considering one of Canada's more compact resorts. Panorama, Big White, Sun Peaks and Tremblant all offer a world-class family experience.

Expect quieter slopes than you might be used to in Europe, and easy access to beginner-friendly terrain with learning areas at the bases of most resorts. The variety in Canada is incredible - in one or two lifts, you can go from dedicated children's areas to steep, deep off-piste (but in bounds!) powder runs. Resorts offer all-day ski school and childcare so you don't have to worry about missing out on your own ski time, while well-designed lift networks and ski villages mean that you're never too far from your accommodation.

Off the slopes, the rugged mountains provide the perfect backdrop for a host of winter activities. Tubing, snowmobiling, dog sledding and snowshoeing are all highly popular, or why not go full-Canadian and catch an ice hockey game?
