Big Mountain Ski Safari

USA

Jackson Hole Bluebird Cliff Drop © Jackson Hole Mountain Resort
Our Big Mountain Ski Safari is a ski trip of gigantic proportions, tackling the vast terrain and legendary couloirs of two of North America's most iconic ski destinations: Big Sky and Jackson Hole.
  • Powder
  • Off the Beaten Track
  • Once-in-a-Lifetime
  • Non-Ski Activities
Beginner
Intermediate
Advanced

Home to two of the biggest vertical drops in North America and some of the most challenging terrain in the world, we can't think of a better combination for expert skiers - less than 4 hours apart and both featuring on the Ikon Pass too.

Fairly unknown outside of the US, Big Sky in Montana boasts North America's third-largest ski area with 5,800 acres of mostly advanced terrain.

There's skiing for all abilities, but the resort excels for expert skiers and snowboarders. Back in 2019, Big Sky introduced a 'triple black diamond' rating for most of the runs off Lone Mountain. Expect steep chutes and cliff drops and definitely hire a guide if you're heading up the Lone Peak Tram.

Jackson Hole needs no introduction for diehard skiers. The iconic resort has invested heavily in the beginner and intermediate experience but is still best known for steep and deep skiing. We also love the infectious cowboy vibe of Jackson Town, where better to relive the day's best runs than on a stool at the Million Dollar Cowboy, rubbing elbows with the local powder hounds.

The Ikon Pass offers seven days of skiing in each resort, ideal for a two-week twin-centre, or why not extend your itinerary with a day trip or short stay in Yellowstone National Park? Sitting perfectly between the two resorts, it's the ideal way to rest your legs exploring the USA's first-ever national park. It's also possible to add a day's skiing in Grand Targhee, just 1.5 hours from Jackson Hole.

The road trips are effortless on this ski safari, and with airports near both Big Sky and Jackson Hole, there’s no need to backtrack.

Available with shared transfers or car hire.

"This is the most exciting ski safari I’ve done. It combines two of the best ski resorts in North America, Big Sky and Jackson Hole, with an easy four-hour drive through Yellowstone National Park."

Suggested Itinerary

This sample itinerary is our suggestion of how you could divide your time between Big Sky and Jackson Hole. All our ski safaris are completely tailor-made and can be adjusted to suit your preferences.

Day 1

It's a one-stop flight into Bozeman airport and as it's a late arrival, you'll spend the first night resting up in one of the hotels in Bozeman Airport before leaving early the next day. Bozeman is a great town, and Bridger Bowl ski resort is only 45 minutes away if you want to try something a bit different.

Days 2-5

It's a 1.5 hour drive to Big Sky, one of North America's largest but most underrated resorts. The terrain varies from gentle tree-lined groomers to scary skiing off Lone Peak, and the resort receives a big 10 metres of snow each year.

Day 6

Drive 4 hours to Jackson Hole (including stops for scenic snaps). You don't really need a car in the resort, as even if you choose to stay in town, there's a great public shuttle service and many hotels have their own free shuttle too. You will find that hotels in Jackson town are often a third of the price of staying on Teton Mountain and as most of the bars, restaurants and shops are in town, you get more of the destination's atmosphere. If you do want to be closer to the slopes, Hotel Terra and Teton Mountain Lodge offer some of the best value ski-in ski-out luxury in North America.

Days 7-12

Spend 6 days in Jackson Hole. If the legs need a rest, you can work in a day off the slopes to do some of the activities in town, have a luxury spa day in The Amangani, or ski on the local Snowking Resort in town.

It's also possible to venture further afield with a day trip to Yellowstone National Park to see Old Faithful, or to Grand Tarhee for more steep and deep thrills.

Day 13

It's only a 15-minute shuttle ride from town to Jackson Hole airport for the return flight back to the UK.

Village Centre (Big Sky) - great room with fridge, microwave and a beautiful fire. Perfect ski-in ski-out location. Fantastic breakfast. We had a fantastic view of Lone Mountain from our room. The ski valet service was great at the end of the day. Three Bears (West Yellowstone) - lovely big room, friendly helpful staff, another good breakfast. Teewinot Lodge (Grand Targhee) - good size room. About…

We cannot fault this holiday, we would do it again without hesitation. It was well organised and fantastic fun to ski three completely different resorts in one vacation. The day off at Yellowstone is perfect for giving a break from the skiing.

Great time, really only need to do three days in Big Sky. Targhee is well worth going to as is skidoo in or out of Yellowstone Park. Jackson is Jackson. Snake River Lodge feel has gone down hill in service.

This is the second time we have done this safari, though this time we skied Bridger Bowl from Bozeman instead of Grand Targhee. We had much better snow this time and it was good value (we booked early, and the Ikon pass helped). The skiing is varied and generally excellent, and the trips between make it seem like a real adventure.

With hindsight - would have reduced a couple of days on the slopes and booked a snowmobile trip through Yellowstone. Really loved the whole trip and was perfect except for the comment above. I say this even though we got food poisoning, flight delays and a torn calf on the last day.

This was the most perfect road trip from start to finish. A fantastic start to the holiday was a 3 hour flight to Reykjavik where we spent 4 nights at the Hotel Marina, a lovely hotel in a great position from where we were able to do a Northern Lights Tour compliments of Ski Safari, a trip to the blue Lagoon and also a Golden Circle Tour. A great start to the ski trip which then involved a flight …

This is one of the most scenic and enjoyable trips I have ever done. The ski areas are amazing and the views are breath taking! I would really recommend this trip. If you want to get into Yellowstone, however, check the dates as it closes for Spring break.

We have not 'safaried' before, as we usually stay in one place and ski multiple areas if we can. It was really easy to do, and we didn't really lose any ski time (we left Big Sky at 3pm to drive to Grand Targhee). It made it more of an adventure, we saw some incredible scenery, and we loved all three resorts. A fantastic holiday.

Brilliant stay in West Yellowstone and despite poor snow levels the 2 park trips were fantastic.
