Despite the journey time, the effort is very definitely worth it. The perennial problem of crowds at the lifts up onto the mountain are there - but the system of using multiple lines (all equipped with complimentary tissues at their 'sniffle stations'!) and queue managers meant that everyone moved at the same rate. Once on the slopes, the pistes were well signed, although missing the familiar European method of informing you how much of the run remains from any one of the signs and, whilst we were there over Christmas, virtually empty. The 'Peak-to-Peak' from Whistler mountain to neighbouring Blackcomb gondola is an experience in it's own right, especially the glass-bottomed versions! So glad that this was in place, heaven knows how skiers got from one mountain to the other before it was built. The on-mountain catering was by a single franchise, so whilst this meant that there was a standard quality, consistency and price, it did somewhat limit the choice. Also, it was quite difficult to find a decent cappuccino!

There's plenty of activity in Whistler; mountains to suit all levels. Great ski adventure camp for kids. Other stuff besides skiing - Zip trek, dog sled tours, snowmobiles, ice skating, cinema, Coca Cola tube park... Plenty of food choices and all busy so booking is needed where possible. The best shop to visit is the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Shop which is a welcome sight after a day of ski-ing! Whistler is definitely worth a visit.

It's hard to beat Whistler as there really is something for everyone. Some of the steepest slopes you'll ever dare to ski are in-bounds, enabling you to access the kind of terrain that would mean hiring a back-country guide anywhere else . There are acres of intermediate runs too, as well as designated family zones for those with small children and who are just learning. The ski school is great and I would definitely recommend you have a lesson whilst you're there whatever your level. Whistler always delivers, even in this poor snow year, the conditions in the alpine would have many other resorts green with envy. If fine dining is your thing, there are some truly outstanding restaurants. Into live music? There's something on every night in Whistler - at après and later. Pick up a copy of the Pique to see the listings. And if you can tag on a stay in Vancouver and a few days in Vancouver Island, it's definitely worth the diversion. I can't recommend Whistler highly enough.
