Just spent Christmas week at Silver Star. Very different from European skiing - lots of powder and even on the busiest skiing day of the year you often get a run entirely to yourself. Queues, if there are any, are short and fast moving with the exception of the magic carpet for beginners, whose queue is ridiculously long. Very safe and family friendly - there's no Folie Douce or Krazy Kanguruh or rowdy stag parties here - and people tend to ski responsibly. The instructors at the ski school are fabulous. For adults they tend to be very experienced and well qualified Canadians or Australians, for kids they were mostly young Scandinavians. The clientele is friendly, polite and pretty much 100% anglophone - lots of locals, plus people from the rest of Canada, Australia and a few Brits. Dress is very informal - there's no designer gear on show here, perhaps because the apres scene is very low key, Snowbird and Firelight are nice, modern, places to stay - very comfortable, although Snowbird is more central. There is a LOT to do other than skiing - teenagers will like the snowcats, bowling and tubing. My only complaint about Silver Star is perhaps the food - it's good value, in that the portions are huge and the prices reasonable compared to Europe - but there's not much variety and vegetables are in fairly short supply. The various eateries offer a fairly consistent diet of burgers, ribs, pasta and fried stuff, except for Bugaboo's Cafe, owned by a Belgian called Frank, which offers the same gulasch soup you'd find at any European mountain restaurant. This resort would suit a family or couple who take skiing more seriously than the apres or social networking.
