With perfect powder, heaps of vertical and lots of black diamond runs, this is big mountain skiing at its best.

Ski holidays in Kicking Horse put even the most seasoned skiers in our office to the test. With more black and double black diamond runs than any other grades, advanced skiers come here for the inbound chutes, ridges and bowls. Kicking Horse is also famous for its light powder and fantastic former heli-ski-only terrain - we’d definitely recommend a guide.

Intermediates can take it easier on the cruisers, and beginners have gentle terrain near the mountain base. To get even more from the area it’s best to hire a car, as both Revelstoke and Lake Louise are within easy driving distance.

Kicking Horse has a small village base with slope-side restaurants but, for the best on-mountain dining experience, the panoramic Eagle’s Eye Restaurant at the summit is absolutely stunning. For more eateries and après options, it’s a few miles’ drive to the authentic mining town of Golden.

"'The Horse' is a must for the die-hard skiers & boarders, with an incredible vertical drop of 1,250 meters and terrain that will test you to the limit. To really get the most from Kicking Horse I’d definitely recommend spending a day with a Big Mountain Centre guide."

Accommodation in Kicking Horse

Each accommodation option in Kicking Horse has its merits: the slope-side condos give the easiest piste access, whereas downtown Golden is the best value. Alternatively, you could position yourself between Kicking Horse and Lake Louise to divide your ski days between the two. We’ve stayed at or visited all our Kicking Horse accommodation options, so call us for advice and we’ll recommend the best ones for you.

Nicola Hurford - Kicking Horse
So many more blue run skiing, so don’t be put off by the extreme mountain reviews. We absolutely loved Kicking Horse. The Eagles Eye restaurant is fabulous. Best food we had in Canada and such good value. The views are incredible. Very easy for us as a couple to ski slightly different routes meeting at the bottom and travelling in the gondola together.

Lovely resort though we were not super lucky with fresh snow, but it's a great hill nevertheless, and no queues. More limited dinner options than previously but good range for lunch. Black Diamond great for lunch, Eagle's Eye very good as ever. Good dinner at Winston's.

Kicking Horse is an extreme mountain and not for the faint hearted. The lower lift takes you to easy blues whereas the gondola takes you to the summit with near vertical drop offs. There is not much to do in the evenings but after a day skiing here, you’ll likely not want to venture out for long!

A great ski area with excellent ski in ski out accomodation and very good food options.

The skiing is just amazing. With one gondola ride to the top, the vertical descent is big and avoids all that hopping on and off chairs. There are some chairs if you want a smaller descent.

Great for a challenge, and there are plenty to be had. Off slope there wasn't anywhere to eat in the evenings other than Winston's, however the food and beer were good and the staff were lovely.

Great little ski in, ski out resort base. Only 2 restaurants operating owing to staff shortages and even those have days during the week when they are shut so make sure you book. Golden is a 15-20 mins drive away with some great restaurants, again booking def recommended. Fab coffee at the base at Double Black! Adventurous and fun ski place, not your average big blue cruisers. Instead, you’ve got…

Spectacular. Great "small" ski area for a few days, we would certainly go again.

Wild, mind blowing ski area full of the craziest chutes (Couloirs), alpine bowls and tree skiing that you can ever imagine, you'll need a guide to get the most out of Kicking Horse, as most of it looks way too gnarly to drop into but is great when you're in. Don't miss the hike up to the Ozone the face from the Canadian stop of the free ride world tour, the ride down is one you'll remember for eve…

Great skiing when the lifts are running. Only three lifts in total and the main gondola was repeatedly not working so you could not get to the third chairlift either. The lift pass is expensive and if all you can access is the small chair lift taking you to some blue runs sadly it’s not worth it. Much talk of new lifts so finger crossed as the number of difficult runs is amazing.
