Snowboarding heaven, we spent 7 days in Mammoth which we found perfect for exploring the whole mountain plus a day in June, which is a gem of a place. Lots of off piste, especially on the back side, readily accessible back country if you are prepared to hike a little (the altitude made us think twice about too many hikes), a good variety of parks for those who want to hook a shifty or McTwist and some really friendly locals who will be only too pleased to point you in the right direction (pay a visit to Wave Rave, one of the best snowboarding shops I've ever been to) The lift system is a mix of fast chairs/gondola's with a few older style 2-4 man's and we experienced very few queues to bother us even though the weekend got fairly busy. The resort itself is modern, clean, and hosts a good variety of eateries and bars but don't expect to find European style après, tag on a trip to Vegas as we did if you are need of a few wild nights, and days!!

Firstly, five hours from LA is a bit ambitious, we did 5 and a quarter from just North of LA and 7 hours back due to weather! There is a 65/70 mph limit which is rigorously enforced, (drops to 45/35/25 in towns) we saw 5/6 speed traps or hidden patrol cars driving up on a Sunday. Locals say it's a revenue gathering thing but if you get caught at +10 (+15?) it switches to a reckless driving charge which can be very expensive. The skiing was fine, plenty of choice for all levels but I would say that this is more of a snow boarding resort. There are loads of terrain parks and we met Aussies and Europeans over especially to train. Some of the lifts have the quaint 'no safety bar' system including some exposed ones! Wind can be a problem. The top lifts were closed one day of our trip and another two had 50mph winds on the top ridge but they were still running. Not well published is that there is another mountain on the pass, June Mountain. This would be ideal for beginners, early intermediates as it's just about empty with some long easy pistes as well as some 'easier' double black diamonds at the top. Mammoth has more of a mix with some more challenging marked runs as well as some unmarked and tree runs to find. Village is a work in process, still seems a bit quiet but Mammoth is a fair sized town with loads of shops/restaurants etc. Wouldn't come back here just to ski this one place as there are much more accessible resorts from the UK

Visited Mammoth for spring break, staying at Westin Monache in the village. We had a fantastic time with fresh powder 6/8 days were boarded! The Snowboard school was the best we have been to really friendly and tailored to needs of individual students, great parks for both beginners and intermediates. Our suite at the Westin was excellent, not only a great central location but excellent standard of accommodation also. The hotel provides free ski/snowboard storage. The village operates a free shuttle bus to all ski/snowboard areas and local restaurants and shops running every 15 minutes, so you can park your car (via free valet service or self park if you prefer) and if you don't want to drive again no reason to as everything really accessible. Great variety in local restaurant and bars and there is an excellent choice for take out if you prefer to stay on a locally operated delivery company will pick up a take out order from any restaurant and deliver to your room for a small charge if you prefer to stay in. Westin has excellent hots tubs for recovery after day on slopes and a small laundry with washers and dryers.
