I had never heard of Big Sky before and did very little research before my trip. It came as a total surprise to me that such an expansive, varied, classy and powdery resort was sitting there in south west Montana. This place has got it all from shallow cruisers to frightening terrain parks and shutes. We also spend a day over at the linked resort of Moonlight Basin and I would recommend this option (but just for the day). We stayed at the Huntley Lodge which is very cleverly joined on to the up market Shoshone Hotel such that when you trip through the impressive reception, you feel like a lottery winner. The combination of Jackson Hole and then onto Big Sky worked perfectly for us. Thanks Ski Safari

Been skiing 30yrs. and just got back from the holiday of a lifetime. Went to Jackson and did heliskiing, Big Sky and Grand Targhee, everything was superb, well done to James and Ski Safari. Had been to J & GT before and new what to expect but Big Sky was something else! Wow, it was huge and in the 5 days we were there we didn't ski all of it. It has something for everyone but the off-piste and trees are just out of this world. The fact that we had 2ft. of fresh during our stay gave us so many opportunities but for anyone going to Big Sky you must go ski off the Dakota lift, Awesome!! I must also recommend the accomodation as well (Huntley Lodge), thought I had died and gone to heaven, it was superb. All in all a resort that is off most people's radar but seriously, one of the best I have skied in all my 30yrs. Will certainly go back there and would recommend it to anyone, great value for money to boot. Right now we are planning our next trip with Ski Safari who really are top draw!!

Big mountain (for US). Had 1 week in Huntley Lodge mid-Feb 2008. The accommodation interior is stuck in a 1970's time-warp and not in a cool, kitsch way but the enormous buffet breakfast more than makes up for that single deficiency. If you can get over that, the rest of the resort is fantastic. Great variety of terrain - seriously expert steeps/chutes, flattering open bowls, "thinned out" and natural glade runs and wide open greens/blues for beginners. 4 days snow fall in a week - v. dry and fluffy snow over my knees. Keen intermediates should spend 1 or 2 days at linked Moonlight Basin so as not to get bored. One terrain park is right under the main lift to show off or make prat of self depending on skill level - good range of kickers plus 1/2 dozen ramps/rails. A 2nd park has a half pipe and much steeper gradient - probably for more experienced skiers/riders. On mountain dining has 2 options: 1. better option is The Pinnacle at the top of Ramcharger lift - it has full table service dining with about 15 choices, posh salad/soup/burgers/pasta/fish and about 8 choices of wine; alternatively on the other side of the mountain is Moonlight Lodge off Iron Horse Lift: 2 options here - either the deli bar with hot/cold sandwiches and a few soups or the full table service restaurant with limited menu choices but incredible range of wines. The "village" is limited for apres ski - Whiskey Jacks is about it but is well positioned at the bottom of the home run - or slope off to your hotel bar; and nearly as limited for evening entertainment - Chet's Bar (casual in Huntley) the Carabiner (more sophisticated & hence moodier lighting in the Summit) the Cabin (didn't go in but looked like a younger crowd/casual bar) plus 2 other bars in the Village Mall again for younger/snowboarder crowd. There are about 7 restaurants for dining - two in each hotel, M R Hummers (steaks/ribs) Plaza Pizza, and Tex-Mex in Whiskey Jacks. No particular clubs I saw, but then I was in bed early as was too tired from fab days' skiing. Big pluses are: empty slopes, good chance of powder, wide range of terrain to suit all sorts. Big minuses are: too many slow lifts, limited village life (if you really want that sort of thing). They are planning a big expansion of accommodation - get there now before the number of skiers swamps the mountain and you lose its biggest advantage of emptiness.
