Really enjoyed it. We went onto Jackson Hole which is much more upmarket and sophisticated and that possibly made Big Sky more appealing. Been in Jackson Hole 3 times and really like it but also liked the more laid back atmosphere at Big Sky. Restaurants in the Mountain Village are limited and we finished out in the Village Centre in the Valley a few times to eat which is ok but a bit of a trail. Skiing was very good though not as challenging as Jackson Hole. Happy to recommend Big Sky to anybody.

We went to Big Sky in January 2011. This was our first visit to Big Sky, following several visits to ski resorts in Colorado and the Canadian Rockies. The journey is pretty long - with transfers and waiting between flights it can take around 24 hours to reach the resort. Once there however, it is unbelievably quiet. In 11 days we had to share a lift only twice and never had to queue. The snow was fantastic and powder remains untracked for several days following a large snowfall because of the small number of people on the mountain. The 'mountain village' is very small, just a collection of condos with a few small shops and a couple of restaurants. If you are there to ski/snowboard, then that is no problem, but if you are looking for nightlife, then this is probably not the resort for you. If you are in a self catered condo you will need to make a trip to a grocery store outside of the mountain village. There is a free bus every hour which goes to the bigger meadow village, 20 mins drive away, where there is a bigger store. The one in the mountain village sells basic essentials only. Also highly recommended if you visit Big Sky is a trip to Yellowstone national park. We went on a snowmobile tour and it was excellent (if a little cold at -25C). In summary - excellent resort if you like a quiet holiday with no crowds and do not mind a long journey to get there.

Someone on a lift in Vail told me that Big Sky had everything and was just about the best. He was right. The Rockies here are glaciated much more than in colorado and this means a greatly varied terrain with bowls, ridges, couloirs and gullies. The runs from the top of Lone peak are a truly challenging experience, the Liberty Bowl giving a six mile run do-able by a good advanced skier. The Tram and the Callenger lift lead to expert runs only (highway and midnight are excellent true blacks). Groomers such as Elk Ridge and Calamity Jane are magnificent, with many other groomed areas in bowls and valleys to give a wonderfully varied experience for good beginners upwards. Shedhorn, Durango and Lone Moose lifts give some of the best wilderness skiing that I have seen in 35 years of skiing. Tree skiing varies from relatively easy on Durango to really tough on things like Blackfoot and Snake. The one great surprise is that hardly anyone was there! It is a bit difficult to get to Big Sky with only a small airport at Bozeman with few connections and a change of plane needed from England but this makes it absolutely great. Just go there.
