We've just got back from a brilliant week in Are. A completely different experience from the Alps or North America - like the North West Highlands of Scotland with decent snow and friendly locals! Stunning scenery and brilliant snow conditions. Despite it being half term we didn't see a lift queue all week. We often had the piste to ourselves and whilst there are quite a few T bar lifts,the fact that it was so quiet meant that this didn't in reality slow us down at all. The skiing was varied with excellent, empty carving runs at Duved, some decent steep blacks and lots of off piste as well as lots of fun in the trees. The weather was a good mix of snow flurries and sunshine. The temperature got down to -20, but wasn't a problem. The Brunkulla apartments were like an Ikea catalogue, much bigger than any French ski apartment and well placed for both the slopes and town. The town itself was attractive with a range of stylish shops as well the usual ski shops. Lots of restaurants, although not a great range of vegetarian food other than the usual pizza. The cost of alcohol in bars and restaurants was high, but you expect that in Sweden. We can't wait to go back...
