We spent Xmas week in Trysil. We researched the resort with the advice of Ski Safari staff (Andy Hemingway was very knowledgeable) and the trip lived up to our expectations. Trysil is a beautiful area, awesome scenery - not the dramatic mountains of the Alps, but with its own charm especially among the tree lined peaks. Snow cover was good, I think we were lucky with the weather in that temps hovered around minus 2/3 most days so we avoided the extreme cold some had warned us of. We had decent top up of snow during the week and only one wet day when rain replaced the snow low down. True, the days are shorter with less daylight than in the UK but this was December so was expected. Lifts opened at 9am and closed at 3.30pm but there is night skiing 3 nights a week and the main pistes are lit up from about 2pm so it wasn't ever a problem. Maybe not a resort for hard core, all-day ski treks but good, family fun. Wind high up could be a problem but much of the main runs are tree lined which provide shelter and were useful to break up flat light. The ski area is small compared to many mainstream European resorts but there was plenty to keep a family of 4 intermediates entertained, nice wide runs, fun in between the trees and often slopes to ourselves. The lift system is efficient, barely any queues although T bars still defeat me ! The ski area is very well maintained, pistes well groomed and maps mostly easy to navigate. Layout is very user friendly, a really good covered escalator took us the 200m from the hotel to the main lift. Alternatively, we could go straight from the boot room, onto the nursery slope, up a button lift and direct to the main lift. 100% ski in / out. We stayed at the Radisson and were most impressed. It is a stylish hotel with good facilities. Our 2 bed apartment was spacious and beds super comfy, The pool and spa were welcome. Breakfast was excellent and other restaurants not bad. Norway is expensive for alcohol and eating out. However, I found lift passes and ski hire cheaper than most French resorts and the total holiday cost was not much more than going elsewhere skiing. Overall, a great trip and I would happily return.
