Nashville

USA

Steeped in rich musical history, Nashville is the ultimate pilgrimage for any music fan.

  • Nightlife

From the Grand Ole Opry House and the Ryman Auditorium, where Elvis once performed, to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Nashville is never more alive than when the sun goes down and the neon lights of Music Row light up.

Every step along the buzzing Honky Tonk Row rewards you with another sound, another bar or music hall paying homage to acts past and present. Here you can stop by the most famous of all, Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, to check out a local or international act and soak up the atmosphere.

Though most associate Nashville with iconic music, the city also has a significant history, including a number of sites relating to the American Civil War. Bald Hill provides views across the former battlefield and other Civil War sites include Shy’s Hill and Fort Negley.

Take a steamboat along the Cumberland River through the heart of Nashville taking in historic landmarks, visit its very own Parthenon (an exact replica of the original in Athens), or simply relax and enjoy its many bars, cafés and restaurants. The city is famous for Nashville Hot Chicken and if you enjoy spice, Cayenne Pepper in particular, it won't disappoint. Wash it down with a Jack Daniel's, made in neighbouring Lynchburg, where you can take the tour to sample some of Tennessee’s finest.

"Nashville, Tennessee, like the accent of the deep south or a welcome Jack Daniel's, just rolls off the tongue. Forget bucket list, this is guitar-case country music heaven!"

Attractions

Ryman Auditorium - does a great tour, but also showcases weekly concerts. One of the regular shows is ‘Opry at the Ryman’. Elvis has played here, plus Dolly Parton, Hank Williams and Patsy Cline. More recently, the Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Tom Jones have all featured, showing there's more to music in Nashville than country.

The Grand Ole Opry - take a tour or enjoy the iconic country music stage show, nicknamed "The Show That Made Country Music Famous".

Tootsie's Orchid Lounge - one of the best-known venues on Broadway. It backs on to the Ryman Auditorium.

Bluebird Café - off the main Music Row, it's a ticket-only venue (approx. $20) and will be familiar to anyone who has seen the TV show 'Nashville'.

Country Music Hall of Fame - step back in time through decades of incredible and inspiring musical history. With permanent exhibits from legendary acts such as Johnny Cash and Tammy Wynette and copies of every gold and platinum country record ever made, this really is a mesmerising experience for music and history lovers. If you take the Studio B tour, you can also experience the historic RCA Studio B, where over 35,000 songs have been recorded including 1,000 American top ten hits and more than 150 Elvis Presley records.

Franklin - 20 minutes from Nashville and where many of the major recording artists have their homes. It's an historic town and is worth a visit for the Carnton Plantation, Carter House and Lotz House which stand as monuments to the Civil War's bloodiest five hour battle

Jack n' Back Tour - departing from the Omni Hotel, this day tasting tour takes you to Lynchburg (1.5 hrs from Nashville) to learn about the Jack Daniel's distillery with time to explore in Lynchburg before returning at 4pm.

Nelson's Green Brier Distillery - Nelson’s Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey actually sold more whisky than Jack Daniel’s before the Prohibition. Just 10 minutes from Broadway.

Musician's Hall of Fame - not so well known, this museum houses a Grammy Museum Gallery but, best of all, allows visitors to play the instruments on a stage (headphones on) or jam with anyone who wants to join in - a great option for families.

General Jackson Showboat - various options are available to take a paddle steamer tour on the Cumberland River, the General Jackson is named after the first steamboat to operate on the Cumberland River in 1817.
