Offering some of the best skiing in the USA and overlooking the sapphire-blue waters of Lake Tahoe, Heavenly is one of the most unique snowsport destinations on the planet. Located in South Lake Tahoe, with lively nightlife, a fun gambling scene and great value accommodation, the resort is a superb base to not only experience the 4,800 acres of varied ski terrain that Heavenly has to offer, but also the 7 other resorts around Lake Tahoe - all within easy reach by car.

The area also has one of the longest seasons in North America and so is a great option for Easter trips. The snow is still great with powder days very likely and you can take some time to enjoy the sunshine in cities like San Francisco.

We also highly recommend including a few nights in Las Vegas, 'the entertainment capital of the world'. The drive through Death Valley is an easy one, with opportunities for some spectacular scenery. Once you get to the bright lights of the city, the accommodation is very affordable and you will get to experience some of the most famous casino hotels in the world like the Bellagio, the MGM Grand and the Tropicana.

Below are two ways to best combine these two world-class destinations. Option 1 includes hiring a car, giving you the freedom to easily explore all of Lake Tahoe's ski destinations and also experience the awesome road trip from the mountains to Las Vegas

Option 2 involves less travel time with an internal flight, rather than driving, and will mean your skiing time will mostly be spent in Heavenly (certainly not a bad thing!) although there are public transport options to some of the other resorts in the area. Alternatively you can pick up a car in Reno for your time in the ski resorts. Call us for advice on the option that might suit you best.

Option 1 - Las Vegas & Lake Tahoe Self-drive Ski Safari

This itinerary combines varied and skiing and boarding at Lake Tahoe’s ski resorts with an extraordinary drive through Death Valley to Las Vegas – an experience not to be missed!

  • Fly from London into San Francisco and return from Las Vegas
  • 7 nights in Heavenly
  • 3 nights in Las Vegas
  • All inclusive SUV hire for the duration

Days 1-7:

Fly direct into San Francisco and pick up your SUV for the drive out to Heavenly. You then have 6 days in which to explore the 7 resorts around Lake Tahoe. Each ski area has something different to offer, from the gentle tree lined slopes of Northstar, perfect for beginners and families, to the rugged steeps of Kirkwood. There are a number of different lift pass options allowing you to ski more than one resort on the same pass and the furthest resort is about 1¼ hours from Heavenly, making them all very accessible for a day’s skiing.

Do also take some time to explore Lake Tahoe which is just beautiful. There are a number of great restaurants on the lakefront and the Tahoe Queen paddle steamer is an old-school favourite offering a unique experience and amazing view of the Lake.  There are some incredible photo opportunities as you drive around the Lake with Emerald Bay being particularly worth a stop.

Days 8-10:

On the 8th day you begin what is a truly extraordinary experience – the road trip to Las Vegas through Death Valley. This is an 8 hr drive but it is worthwhile taking your time and appreciating the dramatic changes in scenery - it’s a great experience being on a mountain in the morning and then 200 ft below sea level in the desert a few hours later.

Finish off this amazing trip with 3 nights in the party capital of the world. Whether you gamble or not, everyone has to experience the extravagance and exuberance of Las Vegas at night. You can choose to take a drive to the Hoover Dam, take a (very reasonably priced) helicopter ride out to the Grand Canyon, do some serious shopping or just lounge by the pool, sipping cocktails and people watching before your flight back to London from Las Vegas.
