We thoroughly enjoyed the skiing in Kvitfjell. The snow is good and you can find everything to suit your mood, from steep and challenging through to glorious cruising. There are a number of cute and quirky places to stop for hot drinks and a snack too. Despite visiting over the New Year holidays, it never felt too busy and we soon learnt where to go to have the slopes virtually to ourselves. We hadn't expected this much choice in Norway, so it was a pleasant surprise. There were a couple of days when the wind got up and the main lift out of the village was closed, but the T bars remained open if you don't mind a long queue. Other than that, we never queued and found it easy to get around the three ski areas that make up the resort. There are a couple of very pleasant bars in the resort and there's one small supermarket, but that is all. Our hotel had good facilities, but without a car, you would need a taxi to get out sight-seeing on non-skiing days and they are expensive.

We loved our week in beautiful Kvitfjell. The train journey from Oslo airport was straightforward and the scenery stunning. We were lucky with the weather, sunny every day, long sunrises and sunsets allowing us about 5 hours out on the pistes and it only got down to about -4, but having brought a balaclava I wore it nonetheless! As for the skiing itself, plenty of snow, well-groomed, wide pistes and excellent ski patrol (they showed us back down the mountain on our first day and were brilliant with the kids). Either my skiing has got a bit worse but the pistes certainly felt at the harder end of each colour grade so it's worth asking the lift or ski hire people about where to start if you're getting your ski legs back, the blue and green pistes over in Kvitfhell west/garden were great with just the blue back down to the hotel from the top the only piste that got a little patchy and busy-ish at the end of the day and there was one stretch I wasn't too keen on. We were so pleased that as we'd discovered in Geilo on our previous visit and what had drawn us back to Norway once again was indeed true even over New Year, the pistes were so quiet and no queues for the lifts apart from a few hours when the wind got up and the main chairlift stopped. Finally, the ski school. It has two bases, one at GudbrandsGard and one over in Kvitfjell west. The children's group lessons were in Kvitfjell west, the instructor was OK and they enjoyed it but when they had a separate lesson at the end of the week the instructor was brilliant and they were really enthusing. If the parents aren't confident skiers I'd probably look into lessons at the base near the hotel to save the skiing home at the end of each day. Overall a brilliant holiday and lots of happy memories. We even saw an elk!
