The hotel is extremely well placed, with genuine ski in/ski out access to the slopes, and convenient storage for skies and boots. The public areas are spacious and comfortable, with relaxing sofas in front of cosy log fires. The staff are, without exception, very friendly, efficient and helpful. The food is good, plentiful and there's lots of choice. We appreciated the full board arrangement, with everything provided for you to make sandwiches for lunch and take them away with you. We stayed in a standard room, which was perfectly adequate, but on reflection we should have explored options for superior rooms, just for a little more space and perhaps a bath to supplement the large, walk-in shower. At first glance the storage was a bit tight, but then we discovered the ski-wear friendly, extra large drawers in the end of the bed. What joy. We were there over New Year, and so, too, were quite a large number of very excited small people, who thoroughly enjoyed charging around the corridors at full pelt. It is a good place for families and they could safely be left unsupervised from a remarkably young age, but if it's peace and quiet you are after then wait until they are more likely to be back in the classroom. With regard to facilities, the swimming pool is great - a proper size for a decent swim - and the large, indoor hot tub made up for the absence of a place to soak in the bedroom. The gym isn't large, but it is well equipped with a good variety of work stations and you could easily have it to yourself. One recommendation we would make would be for the hotel to tune in at least one international TV station in the bedrooms, even if it is just a news channel.

The GudbrandsGard hotel was an attractive and relaxing environment. It was a special occasion so we'd booked a suite, with a double bedroom off a main living room which had a sofabed and a daybed for the children. The room was pleasant in its decor, perfectly functional but it's definitely not a sophisticated boutique experience with twenty swish cushions on each bed. The pool was a good size and we all enjoyed our swims. The hotel was full over new year and apart from a chaotic first evening where we were finding our feet and they were rushed off theirs it was pretty faultless, with warm service and good buffet breakfasts and dinners that suited us well. The salmon and seafood were exceptional and on the few evenings when there wasn't a hot vegetarian option for me the chef cooked a pasta dish specially. The 'lunch packets' worked fine, a plastic zip bag for each guest and sliced bread, cheese, meats etc to make up sandwiches, the appeal of which wore off slightly as the week went on but we weren't exactly hungry as we were so well fed otherwise. (I was glad I'd taken some snacks/chocs etc over with us to supplement it). It's worth looking out for the 'grill huts' to eat packed lunches, essentially sheds with BBQs and picnic tables, fun watching the locals cook their lunches.
