The resort was so beautiful and easy to navigate. The ease of getting our skis and onto the slopes in minutes was just what we were looking for. The slopes were great for myself and two children as they loved to pop in and out of the trees. The size of the resort meant we didn't get lost, we got to know the quiet red, and beautifully winding green very well. It felt very local, friendly and chilled. A relaxing, fun time had by all.

Gausta had great snow, the pistes are well groomed and very quiet even in peak season - ideal for young families. It's a small ski resort with mostly T bar drag lifts and only two chair lifts. No on-piste cafes, bars or restaurants, just a main cafe/bar at the bottom of the two main ski areas though you are never that far from either. Just one small shop, a cafe/bakery and ski store in the resort so it's pretty limited for non-skiiers. It's a four hour transfer from Oslo by train and taxi which is a bit of a schlep.

On the mountain we found Gausta to be mainly intermediate focused, but with such perfect conditions, even our more adventurous children found entertainment in the trees and the somewhat limited terrain parks (we all snowboard). There is limited scope for the most advanced skiers, but for almost everyone else we found it great fun. Eating on the mountain is effectively limited to the two main base areas, but this worked well and was always vibrant with perfectly acceptable food for pit stops. We sampled night skiing and the unexpectedly lively music in the upstairs bar at the main complex. Given we were there during Swedish and Danish half term (Norwegian half term was the following week), our longest queue time was 6 mins (once), but on average we estimated about 30s of queuing, more often than not literally no queue, which makes the relatively short slopes really good fun with lots of ride time vs. lift time. Even when one of the two chairlifts failed, the resort stayed nicely spacious, with red slopes often entirely deserted. We did venture up to the very top via the railway (requires a short but free bus ride), but visibility was too poor to ride down so we can't comment on this other than the trip was still fun and interesting. All in all, a small but beautifully formed resort.

The set-up at Gausta is first-rate. The ski-shop, ski-school and access to the slopes are just a walk across the carpark from the hotel. The ski-ing is varied and plentiful. Views of Gaustatoppen and the surrounding area are spectacular. Our ski safari was memorable on so many levels. As an added bonus, even the journey to and from the resort from Oslo was breath-taking. We cannot be any more grateful for such an experience.
