We have stayed in many grand hotels around the world. However, this hotel is such a treasure it stands head and shoulders above the others. It is so good and we were so well looked after. Many thanks.

Lovely room, excellent food (breakfast and the complimentary meal), excellent location for the slope and the town in general. Lovely friendly and helpful staff.

Good cross between a traditional Ryoken and a hotel. Lovely big room, very traditional. Excellent food. Would have been nice to have had Japanese breakfast each day. Western version a bit ordinary. Lovely Onsen on site, made us lazy and we didn’t visit the ones in town. Great location. A bit noisy with drunken Aussies and locals in the street in the small hours.

Worth the flight to Japan for the ryokan and onsen experience provided at the Tokiwaya, irrespective of the skiing. The staff were perpetually helpful, friendly and polite. Location also conveniently near the 'Moving Walk' for access to the slopes. A wonderful place to experience Japanese culture while also enjoying a skiing holiday.

The ryokan was very conveniently situated in a charming part of town and we enjoyed the exclusive onsen. The staff were delightful and accommodating. It was a total pain having to adopt the Japanese custom of changing shoes at every threshold, especially in a ski resort where lace up shoes are the norm!

We stayed at the Tokiwaya Ryokan for the second year. They remembered us from the previous year. We had an economy room but it was plenty big enough for 2. The futons are normally tidied away every morning and then re-made early evening but this year we were allowed to keep them out which suited us better. Breakfast was very substantial, different food every day and lots of Japanese food. Loved it…
