Happo One in the Hakuba Valley has all you need for a ski trip. Easy access to numerous other ski areas. We loved Iwatake. Plenty of shuttle bus options. Geared towards an Australian market, though lots of other nationalities, Happo didn't really feel like Japan! Possibly because we had toured around for the previous 2 weeks. It's an easy coach trip from Nagano, which is worth a stay if you want to visit the snow monkeys and /or Matsumoto. Give plenty of time for the transfer back to Nagano from Happo bus terminal, don't be alarmed by the very long queues for the transfer bus, they do put on extras at busy times. The skiing was great, tons of snow and good quality hire gear meant it didn't take long to get our ski legs! Wide, wide tree lined pistes, stunning. So pleased we added a weeks skiing to our trip, it made the trip of a lifetime all the more special . Would we go back? .....In a heartbeat, Japan is like nowhere else and we loved it!

What a beautiful area. And it was great to have a choice of resorts, (11 no less), albeit one or two were worth a one or half day trip - but then we just spent the other half of the day somewhere else given that no resort was more than 20 minutes from town.

It was a poor season for Japan but despite a few runs being thin there was a great variety. We stayed at Hakuba Happo and visited Hakuba 47 and Cortina by bus. We enjoyed exploring the different areas each with their own character. Happo was the bigger area but Cortina had a charm and some challenging runs. Only once did we have a significant queue for the gondala on a Japanese Holiday Monday after some fresh snow but it was well mannered and we moved along quickly.
