Toronto and Niagara
The Falls are a natural phenomenon second in size only to Victoria Falls in Africa. Incredibly, every minute, between 30 and 37 million gallons of water go over its crest. The Falls are 188 feet high, with the deepest section of the Niagara River just at their base-going down 170 feet and the rim of Horseshoe Falls measures 2200 feet across. The Falls are composed of two major sections separated by Goat Island: Horseshoe Falls, the majority of which lies on the Canadian side of the border and American Falls on the American side. The smaller Bridal Veil Falls are also located on the American side, separated from the main falls by Luna Island.
In the winter months you can experience the ‘Journey Behind the Falls’ - the noise is deafening as you walk through the tunnels that lead to the Observation Decks behind the falls. In winter it is a sight to behold, as the mist freezes into beautiful formations. The White Water Walk along the edge of the Niagara whitewaters, includes a photo gallery of past stunts and daredevils from Niagara’s history. Visit in the evening for a different view of the Falls with the nightly illumination - or head up the Skylon Tower for a perspective unlike any other.
Please note that unfortunately during the winter months the Maid of the Mist boat tour does not operate - this is because the water around the falls freezes!
