If like us you had always skied in Europe and wondered whether all the hype about skiing in North America was just that, then you need to experience Whistler. Forget the long lift queues of Europe; forget the costly and fussy lunch arrangements to be found in mountain restaurants in Europe; and forget the idea that skiing in April is likely to be a lottery with uncertain ski conditions and no feeling of a winter holiday. We travelled to Whistler on April 6 and had a superb week of skiing even though we had no new snow in the time we were there. The fabulous arrangements whereby you ski an inbound area rather than being restricted to tailored pistes unless you have paid for a guide means that we saw far more of the immense ski areas than we would have done in Europe. The accommodation was generous in capacity and very reasonably priced for the quality. A great range of food options in the evening made it a varied and interesting holiday. And you will not quite believe this, but the resort is at less than 700 metres above sea level therefore arrival and departure is simple. About six hours into the flight across the Atlantic my wife enquired whether it was really going to be worth such a long flight for just an eight day holiday - that was the last time that such a suggestion was made...

Whistler was every bit as good as the guides books tell you, the ski infrastructure, organisation and facilities are well thought out, providing great varied skiing for all levels. We went in a supposedly poor snow year and the skiing was great - late spring warm skiing, as it is sufficiently high. The only thing the PR does not tell you is that food and especially drink is at least 30% higher than we would expect, however it is good quality.
