Big White Ski Holidays

Our second trip to Big White and it lived up to its name - 5 days of poor visibility and freeze-thaw conditions, but also one great powder day. We still had a great time there and and gained a lot of good experience skiing in less than ideal conditions - there are always places to go to make the most of the mountain when conditions are less than ideal. When conditions are good it is a fabulous place to ski - lots of choice of groomed and un-groomed runs and spectacular views. There is a good choice of restaurants catering for a variety of dietary requirements, but there is lack of healthy options to eat during the day unless you want a proper sit-down meal at lunchtime. The supermarket is very well-stocked - for meat eaters - for those who don't eat meat the choice is very poor.

It's big and it's white! The ski area is vast and if you like the challenge of tree runs this is the resort for you. There is something for everyone - beginner to the adventurous. The restaurants available cater for every budget from the cheap (but delicious) to the sushi and fine dining. Nightlife is good and BW put on various events during the week - some free (pancakes, sausages and maple syrup for Shrove Tuesday). It was peak season and the lift queues, whilst big for BW, were small and beautifully managed compared to Europe. The Canadians are so friendly - there are snow hosts available at the top of each chair if you need advice and snow patrol make sure you are safe. A 5* from us.

Superb skiing on a wide variety of terrain. Good choice of hire equipment with the advanced option. Some excellent pubs and restaurants in the village, food options during the day a little limited. A well-stocked supermarket. A small but pretty village. Only down sides for us were that it can get a little more crowded than other Canadian resorts (with the exception of Whistler) and it is prone to poor visibility.

Loved Big White. Good dining options in the village although a bit limited. Fourth Ace was probably our favourite. Small grocery shop but had everything we needed for a few dinners when we stayed in. Great tree runs, Hardly any lift lines at all. Lovely friendly people. Piste sign posting really good although could be tricky in the fog but had pretty much only bluebird days the second week we were there. Loved Black Forest area and really great food in the Black Forest Day Lodge. On mountain dining generally superb quality much better than Whistler. Ski school was good but sadly only daily lessons, no camps, so instructors were never the same. Great tubing park with open fire for those who watch. Would definitely recommend this resort and will come back! 8 year old said he preferred it to Whistler!
