Japan has hundreds of ski resorts, most of which are small with just a couple of lifts and fairly basic accommodation. However there are some real gems, both in terms of the skiing and the resorts themselves. We have carefully selected the largest and best of the country’s ski areas and these are located on either Hokkaido, Japan’s northern island, or in the prefecture of Nagano on the main island of Honshu.

The incredible powder record is one of the main draws for skiing in Japan - its not called Ja-Pow for nothing! - but each of the resorts have so much more to offer on top of incredible skiing. From the sociable and relaxing onsens (hot springs) to the amazing cuisine, you will also be fascinated by the juxtaposition of their compelling history and tradition set against the modern Japanese quirkiness.

This is just as evident in their cities. In Tokyo you can visit the awe-inspiring Senso-Ji Temple followed by a shopping trip to Harajuku where you will see the infamous Harajuku girls in their colourful, anime inspired costumes.

South Korea may not be the first destination that springs to mind for a ski trip. However the relatively short flying time to Seoul makes it a great option for a shorter break or as part of a stopover. South Korea has been chosen as the venue for the 2018 Winter Olympics so there are going to be some exciting developments over the next two years and the ski areas will be going from strength to strength.

It is a country steeped in history and culture and the vibrant city of Seoul is a must-visit. With its colourful markets, strong sense of tradition, tasty food and fantastic nightlife, it is a city that will constantly surprise you. 

There are two main ski resorts in South Korea with Yongpyong being the biggest. Although not vast ski areas, the resorts offer facilities to match the more established Japanese resorts and you’ll see some quirky differences compared to traditional European or North American resorts. Eye-poppingly bright ski-wear, air hoses to brush the snow and ice off skis and boards and night skiing until 4am all fascinated us.
