big enough hill to keep black run skiers occupied for 4 or 5 days when covered in snow - more Rockies in style than Alps
an old village in transition to a modern era so some fascinating contrasts

Great village setting after the bustle of Tokyo with a good selection of resturants and bars. Superb snow and skiing with almost no lift queues, although some of the lifts are showing their age.

Unfortunately we had mixed weather with rain at times. Despite this there were great runs and some good restaurants on the mountain. No trouble with lift queues. The resort was busy but there were lots of good places to eat.

Nozawa onsen is a great ski resort. The onsens are a must to visit and immerse you in the culture of the village. Onsen eggs were particularly good as well as the steamed Nikuman buns which I've had to learn to make since returning.

Resort has amazing potential for off piste, but you might need to duck a rope :-) Great pistes & the resort is great for all levels, lots of really nice places to eat out in the evenings & if you want a day off from skiing the snow monkeys are worth a visit. You have to try the apple steamed buns after skiing in the St Anton cafe.

Never skiied in Japan so no reference point. Unlike anywhere in europe. Haphazard development very japanese. Good variety of places to eat (should have followed your recommendations to a greater degree).
