Expert Opinion Our Expert
James Rivers

"Telluride is renowned for its awesome scenery and wild west historic town. With a new 1 stop flight service from the UK it is now a lot easier to get to and makes a great twin centre Ski Safari with either Aspen or Crested Butte."

Why Telluride?

Telluride – where the mountains are steeper, the town has more character and the rich and famous come to get away from it all. The stunning San Juan mountains and charming Victorian mining-town make Telluride a very special and attractive ski holiday destination. It is a little harder to get to but you will be grateful that you made the extra effort when you get there.

The Skiing

With over 1,800 acres of terrain plus nearly unlimited backcountry, Telluride has plenty of scope for every skier or snowboarder. From the stomach churning chutes of Revelation bowl accessible only after a hike to the 2,400 ft of gorgeous blue vertical from the top of Chair 6, there are runs here to fulfill every skier or riders fantasy. Beginners are also catered for with some long, confidence building greens running all the way back down to the Mountain Village.

Off the Slopes

The town of Telluride is charming and attractive but without the brash glitz and glamour that you get in the likes of Aspen. It has all the wintery activities you would associate with a North American ski resort from dog sledding to ice climbing. You have the choice of the old mining town itself with its smart shops and restaurants or the low key new development in the form of Mountain Village.

The hotels and condo properties are split between the main town and the Mountain Village. The two areas are connected by a gondola that runs until midnight. Both have ski in/out access but do note the town is only served by intermediate runs. Families tend to prefer the quieter Mountain Village but if you are planning on stumbling out of the bars every evening then probably best to stay in the town. There is a great range of high end properties so if you are looking for something special off the beaten track then this is the resort for you.

More Skiing?

Combining Telluride with Crested Butte is an incredible trip and guaranteed to make you the envy of even your most hardcore friends. If even that isn’t enough for you then why not add on a few days in Aspen as well. For more information please see our Classic Colorado Safari.
