Expert Opinion

"Squaw Valley is one of my favourite ski resorts in the US with something for everyone – great cruising tree runs to gnarly chutes. For skiers/boarders looking for a higher standard of accommodation in Lake Tahoe this is your #1 choice”

The high alpine Lake Tahoe provides a beautiful setting for a host of ski resorts set around the lake including Heavenly and Squaw Valley which are the best known.

Lake Tahoe is an easy 3 hour drive from San Francisco and the casinos in the Nevada section of Lake Tahoe, where gambling is legal, make it a fun place to go. It is also possible to fly into Reno (indirect flight) which is only an hour or so from the skiing, although this is usually a slightly more expensive option.

Located at the north end of the Lake, Squaw Valley has joined forces with Alpine Meadows ski resorts for the 2011/12 season to offer over 6,000 acres of skiable terrain across 8 Sierra Nevada mountain peaks. The ski resorts, which are only a 10 minute drive apart, receive an average of 450 inches of snow each year. Though good for both beginners and intermediates around the High Camp area, Squaw is an advanced skiers' paradise with huge open bowls and steep couloirs. It was used to host the 1960 Winter Olympics, so if you are a confident skier, then head up the KT 22 lift and ski anywhere from there! It is also particularly well designed for snowboarders who can test their skills at the floodlit terrain park and half-pipe. The all new Tahoe Super Pass and Tahoe Super Six which allow guests, with one pass, access to both of these incredible mountains provides unmatched value.

Squaw accommodation comprises the Village at the mountain base which offers a great choice of ski-in ski-out, slopeside lodging, plus condos to suit all group sizes from couples to big groups! There are a number of shops and great restaurants in the Village area, and the Mountain base at the top of the gondola offers dining options, an ice skating rink and night-skiing.
