Japan Travel Advice

Although travel requirements might seem confusing at the moment, for the vast majority of travellers they are actually relatively straightforward and it is just a question of completing each of the steps involved.

However, please do take the time to read and understand the entry requirements pages on the UK Government and Japanese Government websites before you travel.

We've summarised the requirements for travelling to and from Japan as we understand them as of 08 November 2022. They assume you are travelling from the UK, are fully vaccinated and have not visited any other countries 14 days prior to travel.

We have tried to be as comprehensive as possible, but we cannot account for all circumstances. Requirements are subject to change at any time and we do not take any responsibility for the information provided. You must make your own enquiries to satisfy yourself that you and your party can meet the entry requirements to match your intended travel arrangements.

Before you go

Before you travel, you should:

  1. Carefully read and follow the procedures for international travellers and pre-register for online Quarantine, Immigration, and Customs declaration procedures
  2. Ensure that you are able to show proof of full vaccination or be able to provide a negative PCR test within 72 hours before your flight
  3. Ensure that your travel insurance includes comprehensive winter sports and coronavirus cover

On arrival

To enter Japan, you will need to be able to show your:

  1. Proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before your flight
  2. Completed Quarantine, Immigration and Customs QR codes (details here)
  3. Other travel documents

Tip: We highly recommend taking both digital copies on your phone and printed copies of all your required travel documentation, and printing the day before travel to ensure you have the most up to date versions.

While you're there

Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare recommends that you:

  • Wear a face mask when recommended indoors when you are talking at a distance of less than approximately 2 metres.
  • Sanitize your hands thoroughly and wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid the three Cs (closed spaces, crowded places, close-contact settings).

Requirements may vary by prefectures and in some cases by resort. While many requirements, including mask use and proof of vaccination, are no long in place, it's worth checking ahead before you travel.

Returning to the UK

There are currently no COVID requirements for returning to the UK from any country, regardless of age or vaccination status.
