The Trip

The Trip

Discover Riksgränsen's incredible backcountry wilderness with a local guide who will introduce you to ski-touring and take you to the best of the off-piste on our Arctic Ski Touring Group Trip, hosted by Ski Safari founder Richard Rice.

Based north of the Arctic Circle in the snowsure Swedish resort of Riksgränsen, you'll explore the unlimited backcountry easily accessed from the ski area, including that of neighbouring resort, Björkliden, where you can see Lapporten - the iconic Gateway to the Arctic. You’ll gain insight into the Scandinavian approach to the mountains while building confidence in the powder in one of the most perfectly serene places in the world.

Ski touring is the focus of this trip and the terrain is perfect to enjoy this rapidly-growing discipline, both for first-timers and for those who wish to develop existing skills. However, the options are there to get a bit of help on the way up! We'll use ski lifts and the odd boot-pack as well as (for those interested and at an extra cost) snowmobile, snowcat or helicopter to reach as much of the best terrain and powder as possible.

Running from 15 to 22 March 2020, when you can expect excellent snow conditions (typically over 2.5m base), the trip includes seven nights B&B at the Riksgränsen Hotel, with four evening meals included, six days professional guiding, including an introduction to ski touring, six days ski touring equipment rental (including AVI kit) and return flights and transfers. Our founder, Richard Rice, will be on hand throughout.

There will also be an option to add heli-skiing (from around £450pp for a 3 run package), cat-skiing (from around £80pp) and/or snowmobiling to access ski touring terrain (from around £185pp) - these are not included in the package price.

The trip is aimed at confident intermediate and above skiers (able to ski parallel turns on red and black pisted runs), with a little off-piste experience and the desire to do more. However, if you are more experienced, or less experienced off-piste and wish to join this group trip, we can accommodate you too.

For a taste of what to expect, take a look at our trip report from a staff visit in March 2017.

Maximum of 12 places. We expect this trip to sell out quickly. Call us on 01273 224068 or email [email protected] to secure your place.

Riksgränsen

Riksgränsen

The world's most northerly ski resort is a true wilderness experience. We love it for the endless off-piste, the Northern Lights and the midnight sun. North of the Arctic Circle, Riksgränsen ski holidays are completely unique. Here, the lifts open in February and don’t close until June. It’s a magnet for freeriders, with a heli-ski drop zone that's bigger than the Netherlands. The free shuttle to neighbouring Björkliden gives you access to even more off piste.

The Accommodation

The Accommodation

Riksgränsen Hotel Exterior

The Riksgränsen Hotel offers good facilities and a range of accommodation, from simply furnished "skiers" rooms to the more stylish "hotel" rooms. For this trip, your stay is based on taking one of the more stylish and spacious “hotel” rooms and includes half board meals served at the award-winning Lapplandia restaurant.

On site, there’s a ski rental shop with a good range of equipment for hire and a spa with indoor pool (local charge). This overlooks the Vassijaure frozen lake with hot tubs to relax in after a day out on the slopes. The slopes are a short walk away through a snow-covered tunnel.

After your day in the snow, relax by the fireplace, in the spa or head to the bar for afterski – après Scandinavian style. The underground bar has a stage, and live bands frequently perform here - it gets pretty lively at weekends! This is a resort for keen skiers and snowboarders only, and the atmosphere in the hotel is electric.
